  1. The company Life Alert uses rhetorical devices that are Structural in their slogan, “I live alone, but I’m never alone. I have life alert.” The Life Alert system allows users to connect with a response center dispatcher for help through pressing a help button that is worn as a necklace or a wristband. The help button is wirelessly connected to a base console unit. This appeals to the elderly using pathos, and for people who feel like they are unsafe living by themselves. Also, the slogan says, “…but I’m never alone.” to appeal to people who may be lonely. This would help persuade people to buy the product because it gives them a sense of security and safety.

  2. Rhetorical devices can persuade readers and media by the setting. This is because wherever the speech or setting is, it may impact you depending where ever you may be. For example, because of the fires going on in Australia, the people have to adapt to it by moving away and which then, their not going to be able to see as much wildlife anymore. “Australia’s government is offering new help to people who have lost their homes and others affected by bush fires that have burned millions of acres of land. At least 25 people have died in the fires, which have brought historic levels of destruction.” states Cincinnati public radio. This also may help persuade readers to help donate to Australia for all the destruction happening.

  3. In the Clorox wipes ad, the author is appealing to people with children, or mothers. The way this is being portrayed is through rhetorical devices like diction. The message is that clorox wipes are kid friendly and safe for anyone to use. We know this because they use the words approved by mothers. The reason the author does this is to persuade the reader that if it’s safe or good for kids it is safe or good for anybody, therefore they should buy the wipes. The author’s style is also something that is used to persuade the reader that they should buy the wipes. It is used in an attempt to persuade the reader that since moms approve anyone would approve meaning they would like the wipes, and should buy them. They do this by using the word approved. By doing this it is showing that mother use this and approve the item.

  4. Rhetorical devices are used in media to make people agree with someone or like or dislike a product as shown by the Flex Seal series of ads. They do so by showing a problem and then showing how their product can fix said problem, for example in the Flex tape ad it says “Leaky pipes can cause major damage, but Flex Tape grips on tight and bonds instantly!” this shows that they show how their product solves problems because they state a problem such as leaky pipes and show how their product solves said problem by covering the leaky pipes and holding on tight. They also show their strength by using extreme examples like in the flex tape ad where they said. “To show you the power of flex tape, I sawed this boat in half! And repaired it with only flex tape” this is important because it shows the power and strength of their product by sawing a boat in half, repairing it with only flex tape, then showing it on the water. That is a strong tactic for getting people to trust your product

  5. Rhetorical devices are used in persuasive writing and media to target a specific audience and change their opinion about their beliefs by making people agree to them by telling them little exaggerations to make them believe and be on their side. Like in the coke commercials they state, “open a coke, open happiness”, they tell that drinking coke makes you happy so that you buy it and they get money for you buying it. So that makes the commercial very effective by persuading you to buy their products. It also uses semantic reading styles because it uses diction because it uses the word happiness to exaggerate to buy it.

  6. Rhetorical devices can persuade readers and media by exaggeration and setting. When rhetorical devices exaggerate they stretch the actuality of whatever is being used. Also when the setting is something really appealing to the audience. For example burger commercials, usually in burger commercials they exaggerate how good the burger actually is, and how the burger actually looks because they will use so many non-edible things to make it look good and they’ll take hours to make it look that way. They also are repetitive and exaggerate certain words. With setting they’ll draw anything out that could make you want to go, make you not want to go, make you want to help ,and more. A good example with this one is when they show the snowy cold weather and abondon houses and places when it it saying save these animals from there. So that there setting is guilt tripping you to want to help the animals.

  7. Rhetorical devices try to persuade people that their product, program, or idea is better. In smoking videos, they use real life people who have smoked for years. They ended up with lots of problems. They are convincing people to stop smoking before it’s to late. This technique is called a testimonial. They use a real person who explains what happened to here and how she gets ready for a day and has to hide everything before she leaves. At the end they say, “You can Quit/ For Free Help call…”

  9. The Ravioli Smile commercial by Chef Boyardee presents the belief of ethos through the fact that the child obviously enjoys eating the food. Children are generally thought to be picky eaters, but The little boy’s smile proves that Chef Boyardee is delicious, and that it’s a favorite among children, in addition to being cheap. It also presents ethos through the small lettering in the bottom right hand corner. It reads, “Found in Mom’s Basement”. Another common belief is that a mother’s cooking is the best cooking. Because they are making it seem as though mother’s have given their endorsement to this product, they are justifying their credibility as a food brand. The smile can also be considered a work of pathos; who doesn’t like to see a child smiling? It plays on the emotions of the viewers.

Rhetorical devices are used in media to make people agree with someone or like or dislike a product as shown by the shamwow towel commercial. they do this buy describing their product as telling information such as how the tow works wet, absorbs 20x its weight, and by showing the product being used and comparing it to a towel that last a week and that the shamwow towel last 20 years. this convinces people that it is a lot better than ordinary towels and by telling us information about the towel.

  11. In the Kevin Durant & Dwayne Wade Gatorade Commercial it is trying to persuade people that if NBA players use Gatorade products while training/working out then you should use their products to while training/working out. The ad uses the rhetorical device of testimonial because the main character is unable to dunk on another player; the main character is a famous NBA player named Kevin Durant who used Gatorade products while training to get better at dunking.

  12. Rhetorical devices are used in persuasive writing to create emphasis on the authors topic. One example I tend to use a lot in my persuasive writing is repetition. One major example of this is in Taylor Swift’s song Look What Mou Made Me Do. The meaning behind this song is Swift is using this song to backlash at all of her critics publically. In this song she uses the phrase “look what you made me do” 36 tomes throughout the whole song. The meaning of this phrase is she’s telling her critics look what you made me do, you’ve made me who I am and who I am is a successful business woman and musician. So by repeating this statement she’s saying hey this is important and you need to pay attention. She;s making it very clear about what she is trying to do.

  13. A rhetorical device that is used in persuasive writing and media to target a specific audience to change their beliefs or persuade them is propaganda. Authors and companies use this by spreading false information, rumors, or ideas in literature and media. They try to lie and scheme their way into changing the way others think and do it for their own benefit. This form can be seen in advertisements today as well as in books. Companies use slogans as a form of propaganda. For example, in a Coke advertisement, they use the slogan “open a Coke, open happiness” with a positive background. They are using this slogan to get more people to buy their products and make more money. However, this slogan is false and is just one way for the company to market off of it. They are just trying to constantly repeat this saying in their advertisements to convince people slowly that in order to be happy, they should buy Coke. Beyond advertisements, propaganda is also used in literature. As mentioned in Literary Devices, Animal Farm can be used as an example. George Orwell, the author, uses this book to further his personal view of communists. An example is seen in the character Squealer. He spreads false ideas and information about Snowball, another character, to gain the support of the farm. The other animals blinded by loyalty do not see beyond his lies and continue to believe them even when they begin to notice the lies and manipulation. Squealer continues spreading propaganda for his own benefit throughout the book which Orwell uses to display his belief of the lack of trust for communists.

  14. The organization ASPCA uses rhetorical devices like pathos in their commercials by showing these animals freezing in the cold or caged in terrible living conditions to get people to feel sorry for the animals and persuade them to donate money to help. In addition the ASPCA uses logos by giving facts like how many animals were rescued last year or how many animals they found homes for. They also use logos by showing actual events where the animals are suffering of being rescued. Using logos is effective because it shows people what they are donating to is real and that they can trust ASPCA and feel confident they will do what is right with their money.

  16. Rhetorical devices are used in the media to persuade readers into buying their product because it is the better product. Devices like pathos are used in the media to persuade the audience into buying a certain product by appealing to their emotions. For example, the Charmin Ultra Soft Toilet Paper references bears to show that the toilet paper is the best kind you can get. The makers of the toilet paper brand try and show the sweet side of a bear, and how they are so soft and cuddly. Since, soft and cuddly things usually trigger a person’s loving emotions, it reels people in easier. Using pathos in literature is effective because it shows that people would be getting the best for their money, because they are advertising it the way they are.

Like in this ad were they use a metaphor to compare smoking to the terrorist attack of 911, to influence those who smoke to stop, “Why don’t we just call it terrorism”. This ad also uses pathos to affect emotions by bringing a feeling about or from a memory of how horrible and scary that day was.

  18. Rhetorical devices are used in persuasive writing to target a specific audience. The rhetorical devices are also used to persuade readers into buying their product. Devices like pathos is an appeal in advertisements because the advertisements pull at your emotions. An example of this is when you see animal shelter commercials they pull at your heart strings that you want to help those poor, starving animals. This is usual in advertisements to pull at your emotions.

  19. Rhetorical devices are used in persuasive writings and media to target a person’s feelings and logic to make them think differently about a subject and make them think more personally about it. For example ASPCA advertisements, which are those that involve the dogs being abused in shelters and homes, target your feelings (pathos) to make you feel bad for these animals and make you want to help them by paying a small fee every month to the cause. It targets your emotions and love for animals and makes you feel bad for them and causes you to begin to think about donating. This is a very effective method in that it doesn’t just use humans as an advertisement method but it uses animals which many people love and adore just as much, if not more than other humans beings. These ASPCA advertisements say things such as “ Starved. Abandoned. Left to suffer.” to get into your emotions and love for other creatures such as dogs. They target your emotions and make you feel love for another living thing. This is a very effective method and they lure you in and influence you to donate money to their cause. The use of this rhetorical device is extremely effective as explained, and makes the good in people come out. As well as making the good come out in people in can also influence emotions such as anger at other people to push them or influence them even more to donate. They can use anger as a tool for influencing the people to want to stop this mistreatment of animals.

  20. Different Companies use rhetorical devices in different ways, but the goal is to do all the same thing. They want you to think all different ways about things, but want you to buy their product or the item that they are selling. A company may use ethos, logos, or pathos to make you feel like their product will protect you or how their product works or other things. Company Coca-cola uses the rhetorical device of pathos to create and emotional response to their commercial and product that they are advertising. In one of their commercials they show many white polar bears in the arctic and they show a small one which is trying to build a snowman. In the commercial they try to make the small one as good as possible so that they audience will be more attracted to it. After the bear builds the bear it it doesn’t look right, so they use the coca-cola to put in its hands and use the cap as a nose and suddenly it looks right. This ad used pathos to convey that its product is great because it makes you feel sad about the bear and the snowman, but then says that since they had coca-cola it made everything magically better. Also in the coca-cola ads there are birds that can’t get the coke bottle open, so the bears tell him to use his beak to open the bottle. I think that this could really represent how the ad uses cute animals to make you believe that their product is good.

  21. Rhetorical devices are used in the media to persuade people to buy or do something. They use ethos, logos, and pathos to get the attention of certain audiences. An example of a company that uses these strategies is ASPCA. They use ethos to appeal to your emotions to get you to feel bad for the animals. The commercials show miserable animals locked up in cages and in horrible living conditions. They are out in the cold or being abused where they live and this makes people want to donate to the organization to help the animals. In the commercials, they show the images and videos of pets that are in need of help with music that adds to the effect to draw people in to help. This is a very effective method to persuade people. Anyone that watches their advertisements will feel the need to save these animals from their circumstances and give them a better life. This is how the organization gets their donations.

  22. Rhetorical devices are used in persuasive writing to create emphasis on the authors topic. The Frontier Post campaign uses the image of keys, mention of death and a time related quote in order to persuade the audience of the emotional message. Reckless driving is a common problem that needs to be solved by convincing those who drive to be safer. This became an issue because people would go out and drive recklessly and cause accidents which could result in death. The purpose of the careful driving advertising campaign is to inform people of the effects that could happen if they aren’t safer. The campaign will make a difference in the way that people think and respond to the idea of reckless driving. In the driving campaign ad, uses pathos to get the message to not recklessly drive and to relate to the reader with emotional appeal. The text shows pathos device because it relates to people dying. The appeal that this advertisement connects to is emotional because it states that it’s other people’s fault that innocent lives are lost every 25 seconds. The campaign will make a difference in the way that people think about and act while driving which in turn will hopefully make people realize the effects and become safer.

  23. A rhetorical device that is used in persuasive writing and media to persuade a specific audience is propaganda. Companies use slogans as a form of propaganda. For example, in a Coke advertisement, they use the slogan “open a Coke, open happiness”. They use this slogan to get people to believe that buying their product will make you happier, so you will buy their products and they will make more money. However, this slogan is false and is just one way for the company to market off of it. But many people believe that they will become a happier person if they have coke, and this can become an unhealthy lifestyle. Additionally, propaganda is also used in literature. “Animal Farm” can be used as an example. George Orwell uses this book to further his personal view of communists. 24. In a ‘Child Health Foundation’ smoking campaign, it is appealing to parents who smoke near or around young children. A rhetorical device used in the media to persuade parents to change their POV on smoking is diction. Diction refers to word choice, in the ‘Child Health Foundation’ smoking ad it says “Children of parents who smoke, get to heaven early.” this means that if you were to smoke around your kids they could get extremely sick from it and could die early from second-hand smoking. This would help persuade viewers to stop smoking because they get to see a second opinion on smoking with a family, and how dangerous it could be for everyone, especially younger children.

  25. Rhetoric devices are used in the media and in life to persuade people to feel a certain way. For example a Donald Trump ad I recently seen said, Trump Picks on Workers and Widows”. This ad uses the rhetorical device of Pathos. This device appeals to the audiences feelings. In this phrase it says picks on and a relative phrase to this is bullying. In schools around today, bullying is a high form of harassment and kids get in a lot of trouble for it. No one likes a bully because they pick on the little guy and in the “Picks on” is followed by the words widows and workers. Our culture today tries to help out widows because they are usually of older age, and have lost their husband, which is the main provider in the household. So when the ad puts this all together it goes in people’s mind as Trump bullying widows and workers. This is where the ad uses pathos to appeal to people’s emotions. It makes them feel sorry for the widows and workers. So rhetoric devices are used in the media and in life to persuade people to feel a certain way.

  27. rhetorical devices are used to make someone feel a certain way about a topic or object. it uses the media to persuade and influence the audiences emotions or beliefs. authors use certain words or phrases for the purpose of promotion of a product and use phrases mentioning something everyone wants to hear that will make them want to enjoy it or try it and make others want to try it or not to do or try things. such as a smoking advertisement. the smoking advertisement showed a baby holding a cigarette stating “you wouldn’t let your kids smoke” and they say that because its using the rhetorical device pathos because its appealing to your personal feelings, so by bringing their kids into it which mean a lot to people is going to affect their opinions on smoking and they might eventually stop because they then realize how bad it is and how they wouldn’t want their kids doing it .
