  1. I think that “To Kill A Mockingbird” could be considered a bildungsroman text because both the child and the main characters are learning to grow throughout the whole story. Jem and Scout are both children and they are both learning life lessons from Atticus along with their life adventures that they learn from. As Scout grows throughout the beginning of the story Atticus gives him some very helpful advice, he says,”You never really consider anything from anyone else’s point of view till you see it from their side of things…till you walk around in their skin for awhile.” this can prove that this is a bildungsroman story because in these stories when the main characters grow they learn lots of lessons and this is just one in the story that happens to be pointed out. Obviously Scout is growing and learning stuff which makes this a bildungsroman story.

  2. Harper Lee’s novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” could be considered a bildungsroman novel because the characters in the novel grow as humans as the book progresses. Characters such as Scout and Jim learn from Atticus along with life and how they learn from that as well. Through the story, Atticus gives Scout some advice and states that, “You never really consider anything from anyone else’s point of view till you see it from their side of things… till you walk around in their skin for a while.” This quote proves that this is a bildungsroman novel because of how Scout and Jim eventually learn how things work in life and become more mature.

  3. Lee’s To KIll A Mockingbird can be considered a bildungsroman text because further on in the book all the characters are learning how to grow as human beings. Both Scout and Jem are starting to learn and develop lessons from Atticus along with life and how they are learning about that as well. Through the story Atticus shares with Scout some very helpful advice. He states “you never really consider anything from anyone else’s point of view till you see it from their side of things … till you walk around in their skin for a while.” this quote shows a life lesson that Scout is learning from Atticus and he is learning that you never know what someone is going through until you are in their shoes. This is very helpful in life and Scout is learning it from Atticus and seeing how things work throughout life. Therefore this story could be considered a bildungsroman story. – Felicity Gibson

  4. “To Kill a Mockingbird” is a bildungsroman text because of how Scout changes throughout the events in the book. The text states, “You never really consider anything from anyone else’s point of view till you see it from their side of things… till you walk around in their skin for a while.” This shows it is a bildungsroman text because when Scout is told this her perspective on people changes and she better understands those around her and because it shows the psychological and moral growth of Scout and how she grows in maturity and takes people into consideration.

  5. To Kill a Mockingbird can be considered a bildungsroman text due to the growth of Scout morally and psychologically, as she slowly loses her innocence and begins to understand the world and how she determines right from wrong. An example of her growth can be seen when after her and Jem go to read to Mrs Dubose, “‘Mrs. Dubose was a morphine addict,’ said Atticus. ‘She took it as a pain-killer for years. The doctor put her on it. She’d have spent the rest of her life on it and died without so much agony, but she was too contrary—’ … ‘She said she was going to leave this world beholden to nothing and nobody. Jem, when you’re sick as she was, it’s all right to take anything to make it easier, but it wasn’t all right for her. She said she meant to break herself of it before she died, and that’s what she did.’” This shows a lesson that helps develop Scout’s character. She learns moral courage through this experience of Mrs. Dubose showing how strong she was and how she wanted to die free from her addiction. Scout, at first, sees her in a bad light and judges her based on the little she knows about her. After she begins reading to her with Jem and how she died, she begins to see her differently.

  6. Lee’s novel ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ could be considered a bildungsroman text because it focuses on the social maturity of Scout and Jem throughout the novel as they slowly lose their innocents. In ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ is states “Mrs. Dubose was a morphine addict,’ said Atticus. ‘She took it as a pain-killer for years…’She said she was going to leave this world beholden to nothing and nobody, Jem, when you’re sick as she was, it’s all right to take anything to make it easier’ but it wasn’t all right for her.” This shows a lesson that Jem and Scout both learn about courage that helps them see people through different perspectives. They learned courage through the fact that even though Mrs. Dubose was dying, she’d rather go through all of the pain then go back to morphine. After they learn of what Mrs. Dubose did they started to look at her actions in a different perspective than before.

  7. The novel “To Kill A Mockingbird” can be considered a bildungsroman text because throughout the story Scout and Jem are learning valuable life lessons from Atticus and different situations they go through. The text states, “You never really consider anything from anyone else’s point of view till you see it from their side of things…till you walk around in their skin for awhile.” This is just one of many messages Scout and Jem can learn from Atticus. He is teaching them all they need to know to succeed in life once they get older. He is teaching them while they are children so that they can use it later in life.

  8. To Kill a Mockingbird is considered a bildungsroman because through the years of the book shows how scout matures and develops. As scout loses her innocence she starts to learn things about people, causing her to become who she is at the end of the book. One example we see of this is throughout the book Scout is exposed to many different stereotypes including; blacks, poor people, rich people, city folks, and all other kinds of people. Through this exposure scout learns to treat people as individuals instead of stereotypes. Another example we see in the book is through the tom robinson case. Scout learns to stand for what is truly right and just and not just what everyone else thinks is right.

  9. Lee’s novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” can be seen as a Bildungsroman text because the children (Jem and Scout) grow up and change throughout the book. Having Atticus alongside them giving them valuable advice to help them through this thing called life, they learn valuable life lessons. For example, Atticus states, “.. you never really consider anything from anyone else’s point of view till you see it from their side of things… till you walk around in their skin for a while.” This life lesson in particular shows Jem and Scout that you can’t be too quick to judge anyone at first, because you haven’t experienced the things that they have been through, and the way they have been through them.

The loss of innocence helps develop Scouts character because it allows her to grow in maturity. At first Scout was an innocent child who was often seen as “immature” and looked down upon because of that. As she grows she uses advice from Atticus to grow in her maturity and become someone who sees things through lots of perspectives, rather than just herself.

  10. Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” can be considered a bildungsroman text because of the growth Jem and Scout both experience. Specifically, Scout’s loss of innocence helps develop her character, because she begins to learn right from wrong, and not to judge people before knowing their full story. The text states, “‘Mrs. Dubose was a morphine addict,’ said Atticus. ‘She took it as a pain-killer for years. The doctor put her on it. She’d have spent the rest of her life on it and died without so much agony, but she was too contrary-’… ‘She said she was going to leave this world beholden to nothing and nobody. Jem, when you’re sick as she was, it’s all right to take anything to make it easier, but it wasn’t all right for her. She said she meant to break herself of it before she died, and that’s what she did.’” This piece of evidence explains how hard Mrs. Dubose had it before she died. Before Scout knew this, she hated Mrs. Dubose because of how mean she was, but this helped show Scout how hard her life was, and gave her an explanation of why she acted the way she did. This taught Scout that you can’t judge a person without knowing who they really are, because everyone is facing silent battles.
