What kinds of parallels can be made between the setting of the novel and the publish date? Use your notes in your notebook to help make connections. Be sure to have a thesis statement and examples to show your reasoning. Use two examples that show these parallels. 150 words.

One parallel or connection that I can make between the two is that this book was published in 1960 and at that time there was a lot of poverty because of the great depression. In the book it says that Young Walter Cunningham’s family got hit hard by the depression and you can tell that he has cause they say he doesn’t have shoes and he only comes to school one day out of the whole year. This connects to the time the book was published because at this time the U.S. had just gotten out of the depression and lives were still hard. It makes sense that the author would use real world problems though because the readers can relate more to them. Also about the Cunninghams in the text it says,”they don’t have much, but they get along on it.” This quote is just proving the setting, that there were people in depression and that this is one of the main problems at the time.

Actually the great depression ended around the time of the start to end of ww2 due to the construction and factory businesses mass producing lots of weapons and goods. However, I think this was still a good attempt.

One parallel that can be made between the setting of the novel and the publish date was the treatment of African Americans. Back in the 1960’s African Americans were not liked by many white people and they did not have many rights. The book also talks about how African American people were not liked by many white people. In the book it says: “A Negro would not pass the Radley Place…” The book also says: “ Mr. Radley shot at a Negro in his collard patch.” This supports that many African Americans were not liked by many white people because it says that African Americans would not walk by Mr. Radley’s (a white man) place because they were afraid of him. An African American even got shot at by Mr. Radley because Mr. Radley did not want them around. This relates back to the 1960’s because many African Americans were scared of white people and white people were not afraid to hurt African Americans because the law was usually on their side.

One parallel I noticed between when the book was published and the setting of the novel is the subject of poverty. The book was published in the 1960’s, which was a time when people were still recovering from the Great Depression. Chapter 2 of “To Kill a Mockingbird” states, “That spring when we found a crocker-sack full of turnip greens, Atticus said Mr. Cunningham had more than paid him. ‘Why does he pay you like that?’ I asked. ‘Because that’s the only way he can pay me. He has no money.’ ‘Are we poor, Atticus?’ Atticus nodded. ‘We are indeed.’ Jem’s nose wrinkled. ‘Are we as poor as the Cunningham’s?’ ‘Not exactly. The Cunninghams are country folks, farmers, and the crash hit them the hardest.’” This piece of evidence includes the subject of poverty, because it explains how the Cunninghams were affected by the crash, and didn’t have any money. So, being farmers, they did what they could and payed Atticus back with crops. Chapter 2 also states, “Walter Cunningham’s face told everybody in the first grade he had hookworms. His absence of shoes told us how he got them. People caught hookworms going barefooted in barnyards and hog wallows. If Walter had owned any shoes he would have worn them the first day of school and then discarded them until mid-winter.” This piece of evidence shows the subject of poverty because it explains how poor the Cunninghams were, by describing Walter’s lack of cleanliness and clothing. It also mentions that if Walter had owned shoes, he would have worn them on the first day of school and then saved them for winter. This tells me that because the Cunninghams struggled so much, they probably have the mentality that everything they have is a privilege, even shoes, and they need to save them for when they are truly needed so that they don’t risk losing it.

I noticed that the publish date, (July 11th, 1960) was a time where there was poverty, and a lot of people were still being affected from the great depression in previous years. The text states,” ‘Why does he pay you like that?’ I asked. ‘Because that’s the only way he can pay me. He has no money.’…’Are we as poor as the Cunningham’s?’ ‘Not exactly. The Cunninghams are country folks, farmers, and the crash hit them the hardest.’” The text also states,”His absence of shoes told us how he got them. People caught hookworms going barefooted in barnyards and hog wallows.” These quotes show that people were still being affected by the great depression because the Cunninghams had no money, and when Atticus says “the crash hit them the hardest”, he means the great depression. In the 2nd quote, it also says that he had no shoes.

A parallel that can be made from the publishing date of the novel and the setting is the idea of poverty. In the 1960’s, which is the year that the novel was published, it was a time of great poverty, simply because their was still a little of the aftermath from The Great Depression. The novel says, “ Atticus said professional people were poor because the farmers were poor. As Maycomb County was farm country, nickels and dimes were hard to come by for doctors and dentists and lawyers.” This quote shows that EVERYONE was poor, it really didn’t matter what you did for a living. The novel also says, “‘ The Cunninghams never took anything they can’t pay back– no church baskets, and no scrip stamps. They never took anything off of anybody, they get along on what they have. They don’t have much, but they get along.’” This quote shows that the Cunninghams lived a life full of poverty, they got along as it says, but barely.

One parallel that I can draw from the time the book was published (1960) and the setting of the book is the subject of poverty. In 1960 , America was hit by the Great Depression and in this time the stock markets crashed causing the people to lose all of their money. So most of them live in poverty. In the book people such as the Cunninghams live this lifestyle. The text states,”.With Christmas came a crate of smilax and holly. That spring when we found a crokersack full of turnip greens, Atticus said Mr. Cunningham had more than paid him. “Why does he pay you like that?” I asked. “Because that’s the only way he can pay me. He has no money.” “Are we poor, Atticus?” Atticus nodded. “We are indeed.” Jem’s nose wrinkled. “Are we as poor as the Cunninghams?” “Not exactly. The Cunninghams are country folks, farmers, and the crash hit them hardest.” When it says crash hit them the hardest in the last sentence of the quote it is referring to the stock market crash in the 1960s which made a huge portion of the population poor. In the book the Cunninghams were a part of that population and they couldn’t pay people back with money because of it. So in conclusion one parallel that I can draw between the time period of the publishing of the book and the setting in the story is the subject of poverty.

One parallel between the publish date of the book, July 11, 1960, and the setting of the novel is the poverty. During the publication of the book, people still lived in poverty and were still suffering from the aftermath of the Great Depression. People in the 1960s were struggling, and though the book is set in the 1930s, you can see the parallel, people were living in poverty. It says in the novel, “ ‘Why does he pay you like that?’ I asked. ‘Because that’s the only way he can pay me. He has no money.’…’Are we as poor as the Cunningham’s?’ ‘Not exactly. The Cunninghams are country folks, farmers, and the crash hit them the hardest.’” This quote shows how poverty affected some characters in the book like the Cunningham’s. They could barely afford to pay people back, so they tried to pay back in a different way. The novel also states, “ “Walter Cunningham’s face told everybody in the first grade he had hookworms. His absence of shoes told us how he got them. People caught hookworms going barefooted in barnyards and hog wallows. If Walter had owned any shoes he would have worn them the first day of school and then discarded them until mid-winter.” This quote shows how poverty affected them, with the lack of clothing and even cleanliness. He could barely afford shoes and was suffering greatly for it. That’s one parallel between the publication of the book and the setting of the book.

One parallel that can be made between the setting of the novel and the publish date was the treatment of African Americans. The setting of the book is during a time where racism was still really big and where black and white people weren’t allowed to date each other and during the time it was published racism was dying down and people were taking a stand against it. The book states, “ She was white, and she tempted a Negro. She did something that our society is unspeakable: she kissed a black man.” This shows that white people and African Americans weren’t able to be in a relationship because society was so messed up.

One parallel that can be made by the setting (1930) and publish date (1960) of To Kill A Mockingbird was the treatment of African Americans. In To Kill A Mocking Bird, it states, “She was white, and she tempted a Negro. She did something that in our society is unspeakable: she kissed a black man. Not an old Uncle, but a strong young Negro man. No code mattered to her before she broke it, but it came crashing down on her afterward.” This shows whites didn’t like African Americans so much they went out of there way to hurt them and create lasting stereotypes about them and caused people to have unspoken rules as to not converse with them. When the book was published there was still segregation, the Civil Rights Act wasn’t passed until 1964 which outlawed discrimination between race, color, or national origin. This means tensions between whites and African Americans during the 1930s and 1960s, were still on the rise and very dangerous.

One parallel between the setting and time of when the book was made is the differential of class between blacks and whites. In the book it talks about culperina and how she’s a helper to atticus. As well at this time it was still acceptable for white people to say the n word in the book. The book was published in 1960 so slavery was illegal but you can still see in the book how slaves are differed from whites.

One parallel that can be made between the setting of the novel and the publish date was the treatment of African Americans compared to whites during the era. The setting of the book was during a time where racism was still very present in the culture and blacks still were treated unfairly to the whites of the time. During this time racism may have been slowing disappearing but at the same time it was still present in their culture and still actively spoken about. The book states, “ She was white, and she tempted a Negro. She did something that our society is unspeakable: she kissed a black man.” This quotation shows the difference between the races at the time because it shows the reader that blacks were still treated unfairly, and they didn’t deserve the same treatment as whites. It also shows the setting and the time by showing that they were still even publicly spoken out against and discriminated against.

The Cunninghams are country folks, farmers, and the crash hit them the hardest.” This quote shows that almost everyone was poor during this time. And especially since they were farmers, the Great Depression hit them even harder. Another quote from the novel is “Walter Cunningham’s face told everybody in the first grade he had hookworms. His absence of shoes told us how he got them. People caught hookworms going barefoot in barnyards and hog wallows. If Walter had owned any shoes he would have worn them the first day of school and then discarded them until mid-winter.” This quote shows how poverty changed them, from lack of clothing, to cleanliness. He could barely even afford shoes.

One parallel I noticed between the time of the book publishing and the book is treatment of African Americans and civil rights. In the novel a African American man is accused of things because of his race and a white male decides to speak out about it being wrong by defending him in court. Civil rights movement was around the time of 1960 when the book was published. One quote from the book that shows racism/difference in whites and blacks at the time is, “She was white, and she tempted a Negro. She did something that our society is unspeakable: she kissed a black man.” This shows that it was something crazy that should never happen and it shouldn’t have been a big deal.

A parallel that can be made from the books setting to the real world setting is poverty. In the 1960’s, almost everyone was either poor or barley over the poverty line because of the Great Depression and the aftermath it had on the people. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird the setting took place during the Great Depression. Harper Lee uses her book to use her voice in a national community by showing the struggle for equality she is able to change people’s minds on the unresolved national problems like racism, sexism and classism. Her use of literary allusions- references to historical texts, events, or people- allow her to be effective. While the book takes place in the 1930’s Harper Lee includes a quote that states, “ But it was a time of vague optimism for some of the people: Maycomb County had recently been told that it had nothing to fear but fear itself.” this quote was from Franklin D. Roosevelt and he said that in the 1960’s. The use of this allusion helps to give readers knowledge to connect themselves to historical events.

While FDR said “nothing to fear…” in the 30s, Harper Lee uses that not only to remind her audience but also to justify the Civil Rights movement happening at the time of publication, the 60s.

The parallel that I made with the setting of the novel and the published date of To Kill a Mockingbird was in the 1960s, the civil rights movement for African american was taking place to gain equal rights for African Americans under the law of the united states. In the novel it talked about the discrimination against African Americans and how many did not like them. It also tells the unfairness under the law for African Americans, in the book it says “Atticus Finch won’t win, he can’t win, but he’s the only man in these parts who can keep a jury out so long in a case like that. And I thought to myself, well, we’re making a step-it’s just a baby step, but it’s a step.” This supports the idea that African american weren’t equal but under the law it was improving, because it shows that cases like that can’t be won but it might have been close to, and that means improvement for African Americans under law and in the courtroom.
