  1. Wyatt McComas-“The Monkey’s Paw” and “Legand of Sleepy Hallow” make good ghost stories because of a few things, such as characterization, setting, and sequence of events to describe and
show the important/significance of the current events. In “The Monkey’s Paw” the use of the setting and the characterization of the characters greediness to describe how they got them self into the bad events. By using the characteristics of the characters such as their guest like Sergeant-Major Morris to show us the danger of the paw. The author uses the characteristic of how wary the guest is to build suspense about the use of the paw. In the story they also use a setting that is easy to imagine as being considered “spooky” of “creepy”. The story uses the setting of a house in the dark deep woods with very few neighbors to give the characters the sense of isolation. By using the sequence of events, the story explains how terrible the use of the paw is. After the paw the first time, they are warned about how using it a second time could be even worse by the father warning the mother about how she shouldn’t let their son or “it” in because it could be even worse than not having their son. In “Legend of Sleepy Hallow” it uses a very descriptive setting to show the reader how the town is cursed, and feared by the people. It uses the setting to describe how the town is known to have a “curse”. It sets up the rest of the story for being creepy because straight out of the gate we are shown how the town is known for being mysterious, and “haunted”. Throughout the story the story it is slowly developed to become more creepy until the climax where he meets one of the mentioned creatures and is terrified. This is signified by the deep amount of descriptive language that shows us the circumstance and how scared the boy truly is. These things all come together to make a good ghost story/horror story because they can all build suspense in the reader. And make the story very creeper and wary to the reader.

  2. “The Monkeys Paw” and “To Be Taken With A Grain of Salt” By Charles Dickson make a good ghost story because the use of imagery and characterization. In “The Monkeys Paw” it says ”The new arrival talked about his sadness, so that Mrs. White said, “Tut, tut!” and coughed gently as her husband entered the room followed by a tall, heavy built, strong-looking man, whose skin had the healthy reddish colour associated with outdoor life and whose eyes showed that he could be a dangerous enemy.” This detail shows direct characterization, Without characterization a ghost story wouldn’t have any details built on someone or something in the story. Also in “ The Monkeys Paw” it says “A cold wind blew up the staircase, and a long loud cry of disappointment and pain from his wife gave him the courage to run down to her side, and then to the gate.” This shows imagery. Imagery helps show the reader the story instead of telling them. Imagery should help the reader fully experience the story. So without imagery a ghost story wouldn’t be a good ghost story. In “ To Be Taken With a Grain of Salt” it says ” “ I watched what the figure did. It stood for a few moments by the bedside of each of my eleven brother-jurymen, close to the pillow. It always went to the right-hand side of the bed, and always passed out crossing the foot of the next bed. It seemed from the action of the head, merely to look down pensively at each recumbent figure.” This detail shows Characterization. Its describing something which helps you understand the someone or something.

  3. “The Monkey’s Paw” and “Legend of Sleepy Hallow” both make a good ghost story because, they create suspense. “The Monkey’s Paw” says, “He heard the movement of the lock as she began to open it, and at the same moment he found the monkeys’s paw, and frantically breathed his third and last wish.” This quote creates suspense because it drags out that specific moment, but not quite telling the reader what happens next. Hence the reader being forced to read on, to find out the next sequence of events. This quote also shows the word choice of the author in the story, and how it provides a better image of what’s going on in the text. Phrases such as “frantically breathes his third and last wish” tells the reader that Mr. White was saying his wish hastily. “The Legend of Sleepy Hallow” says, “However wide awake they may have been before they entered that sleepy region, they are sure, in a little time, to inhale the witching influence of the air, and begin to grow imaginative, to dream dreams, and see apparitions.” This quote creates suspense by listing some effects of the “witching influence” that is felt by some people in Sleepy Hallow. This foreshadows that a ghostly presence will appear later on in the story, making the reader want to read further. This quote also shows the word choice of the author, and how that creates images in the readers head about the text. Phrases such as, “inhale the witching influence” suggests to the reader that the effects of the “witching influence” cannot be prevented.

  4. “The Monkeys Paw” and “To be Taken With a Grain of Salt” make great ghost stories because they create suspense and imagery. In “The Monkeys Paw” it said, “She broke off as the tragic meaning of the part about him not being in pain came to her. The man had turned his head slightly so as not to look directly at her, but she saw the awful truth in his face. She caught her breath, and turning to her husband, who did not yet understand the man’s meaning, laid her shaking hand on his. There was a long silence.” The way this quote creates suspense is that it will leave the readers wondering what had happened to her son once she realized that he had passed and and if his death had anything to do with the wish that the old man had made earlier in the story. In “The Monkeys Paw” it stated,”Her husband entered the room followed by a tall, heavy built, strong-looking man, whose skin had the healthy reddish color associated with outdoor life and whose eyes showed that he could be a dangerous enemy.” The way this quote creates imagery in the story is that it helps the reader build a mental image if what Sargent – Major Morris looks like in the story. In “To be Taken With a Grain of Salt” it said “I saw their two faces very distinctly, and I knew that I could recognize them anywhere. Not that I had consciously noticed anything very remarkable in either face, except that the man who went first had an unusually lowering appearance, and that the face of the man who followed him was of the color of impure wax.” This quote creates imagery in the story because it allows the readers to create a mental image of what the man looks like because the appearance of the man will be important later in the story. Also in “To be Taken With a Grain of Salt” the text states,” My face was towards the only available door of communication with the dressing-room, and it was closed. My servant’s back was towards that door. While I was speaking to him I saw it open, and a man look in, who very earnestly and mysteriously beckoned to me.That man was the man who had gone second of the two along Piccadilly, and whose face was of the color of impure wax.” This quote creates suspense because it drags out one specific that makes the readers wonder what is behind the door and why it’s behind there.

  5. The Monkey’s Paw” and “To Be Taken With a Grain of Salt” make good ghost stories because “The Monkey’s Paw” shows a good example of a story with suspense and “To Be Taken With a Grain of Salt” shows a good example of a ghost story using characterization. In “To Be Taken With a Grain of Salt” the story states, “I watched what the figure did. It stood for a few moments by the bedside of each of my eleven brother-jurymen, close to the pillow. It always went to the right-hand side of the bed, and always passed out crossing the foot of the next bed. It seemed from the action of the head, merely to look down pensively at each recumbent figure.” In this detail it shows how characterization helps make a good ghost story. In the detail it’s describing the figure which can help make the ghost story scarier as the reader tries to imagine what the author is describing. In “The Monkey’s Paw” the story says “He heard the movement of the lock as she began to open it, and at the same moment he found the monkey’s paw, and frantically breathes his third to last wish.” This quote helps support that “The Monkey’s Paw” makes a good ghost story because it creates suspense. In the story it’s giving the readers a taste of what’s going on, yet still leaving them hanging so they have to read more to find out what happens next.

  6. Faith Bailer- “The Monkey’s Paw” and “The Fall of the House of Usher” make good ghost stories by creating imagery and suspense. “The Monkey’s Paw” states, “And has anybody else wished?”continued the old lady. “The first man had his three wishes. Yes,” was the reply,” I don’t know what the first two were, but the third was for death. That’s how I got the paw.” This quote creates suspense by having the readers wonder what the first man’s third wish was. “The Monkey’s Paw” also states,” Outside, the night was cold and wet , but in the small living room the curtains were closed and the fire burned brightly.” This quote creates the use of imagery by giving the readers details that they can use to put together an image in their head of the first setting. “The Fall of the House of Usher” states,” Roderick Usher, whom I had known as a boy, was now ill and had asked me to come help him. When I arrived I felt something strange and fearful about the great old stone house, about the lake in front of it, and about Usher himself.” This quote creates suspense by leaving the reader wondering why the author feels this way, wondering why he feels like everything is different, causing the reader to want to read on. “The Fall of the House of Usher” also states,” The room I came into was very large and high. The windows were high, and pointed at the top, and so far above the black floor that they were quit out of reach. Only a little light, red in color, made its way through the glass, and served to lighten the nearer and larger objects.” This quote creates the use of imagery by explaining what the character sees in grave detail. With these details the readers can create an accurate image in their head.

  7. A good ghost story consist of many different things.Starting with figurative speech. The story a monkey’s paw has a lot of figurative speech in it one example is “It moved,” he cried, with a look of horror at the object as it lay on the floor. “As I wished, it twisted in my hand like a snake.” “Well, I don’t see the money,”.This quote shows that by using figurative language it has made the story a bit more frightening and more interesting. An example of figurative language in the story to be taken in a grain of salt is I read it twice, if not three times. The discovery had been made in a bedroom, and, when I laid down the paper, I was aware of a flash – rush – flow – I do not know what to call it – no word I can find is satisfactorily descriptive – in which I seemed to see that bedroom passing through my room, like a picture impossibly painted on a running river. These cites of figurative language from the two text is what makes a good ghost story. With different pieces of figurative language it adds a unexpected twist to the story. It contributes to the development of the theme by creating visual representation of ideas in our minds. When the reader visualize the story it helps them understand the theme a lot more than they would have if there was no figurative language added to the story.

I totally agree that The Fall of The House of The Usher is a good ghost story because it is suspenseful. I like how you inserted information from the text that supported this. The story kept me on the end of my seat because the house seemed like a place that I would be scared to go inside. However, the curiosity would get to me because I would want to know what was in there. I think the room they referred to as “the vault” was probably an old abandon dungeon. Perhaps the house was a castle at one point in time or at least it seemed that way.

  9. “The Monkey’s Paw” and “The Fall of the House of Usher” both make good ghost stories because they create suspense. In “The Monkey’s Paw” it says “The first man had his three wishes. Yes”, was the reply, “I don’t know what the first two were, but the third was for death. That’s how I got the paw.” This helps create suspense by showing that the outcome of the first two wishes was so bad they made him want to die. Since they were bad the outcome of Mr.White’s wishes will be bad and once he gets the monkey’s paw you are waiting for him to make his first wish because you know it will be bad. In “The Fall of the House of Usher” it says “I looked at the scene before me-at the house itself – at the ground around it-at the stone cold walls-of the building- at its empty eye-like windows-and at a few dead trees-I looked at the scene, I say, with a complete sadness of soul which was no healthy, earthly feeling. There was a coldness a sickening of the heart in which I could discover nothing to lighten the weight I felt. What was it, I asked myself, what was it that was so fearful, so frightening in my view of the house of Usher? This was the question.to which I could find no answer.” By saying the house looked fearful and frightening it prolongs the story because you want to know why it seems so scary therefore creating suspense. Also, by conveying the feeling the house gave him it makes it seem more frightening. The dead trees, stone cold walls, and empty eye-like windows also help convey the feeling the house gave him but it also gives you a sense of why he felt so frightened, making you wonder what will happen next.

  10. The two stories, ” Legend Of Sleepy Hallow” and ” The Monkey’s Paw” both make great legendary ghost stories because of their creation of suspense . In the novel ” The Monkey’s Paw”, it states ” He heard the movement of the lock as she began to open it, and at the same moment he found the monkey’s paw, and frantically breathed his third and last wish.” Which this quote shows the creation of suspense by taking out the specific moment, but doesn’t give away enough hints to tell the reader what’s going to happen next. In consequence, this is forcing the reader to continue reading and find out what is going to happen next. Also, the word choice gives a better image of what is going on in the passage. For example, the phrase ” frantically breathes his third and last wish” is showing the reader that Mr. White is saying his last wish fast. To put it differently, ” Legend Of Sleepy Hallow” states, ” … they are sure in a little time, to inhale the witching influence of the air, and begin to grow imaginative, to dream dreams, and see apparitions.” The quote is creating suspense by showing some effects of the influence of a witch. Not only is this passage showing suspense but it is also shows foreshadowing. The foreshadowing is held by giving a ghostly presence and later on in the story is also going to be existing, which this is also making the reader wanting to continue on reading the story. The phrase ” inhale the witching influence” is showing the effects of the author’s word choice and giving a better image of the story for the readers.

  11. What makes “The Monkey’s Paw “ a good ghost story is the use of imagery. Even though the story itself was not very scary, the author describes it in a way that makes you feel like you are really there experiencing the events. When the author describes the knocking on the door and how it echoes through the house, I can hear it in my head which makes it seem more real and in doing so, more scary. Another example of this is in the beginning the author describes the setting in vivid detail. They describe the wind blowing, the floor creaking, and the dim lights of the night. This really helps me put myself in the location where this story is taking place and this makes it more spooky because it feels real.

What makes “To Be Taken With a Grain of Salt” a good ghost story is the use of foreshadowing as it helps to create suspense throughout the story. One example that we see Dickens use in this story is in the beginning the main character sees two men on the street. One seems to be chasing the other, but no one else seems to notice. The author creates foreshadowing through this because later in the story you find out that the two men were the murderer and the murdered man. This creates suspense because it keeps you wondering about the mysterious men through the whole story. Another example that we see is the constant appearance of the ghost. This creates foreshadowing to the final verdict of the trial. This also creates suspense throughout the story because you want to know what the final verdict will be.

  12. The passages “The Fall of the House of Usher” and “ The Monkey Paws” make a good ghost story because of the different tools the authors used in both of the passages. All throughout “The Fall of the House of Usher” the author uses words that give the setting a sad and creepy feeling to the story. According to the passage,”I looked at the scene before me — at the house itself — at the ground around it — at the cold stone walls of the building — at its empty eye-like
windows — and at a few dead trees — I looked at this scene, I say, with a complete sadness of soul which was no healthy, earthly feeling.” This shows the author uses words like cold, empty, and sadness to give the setting a creepy feeling to it. The author uses characterization to Roderick Usher by showing the actions that he did. According to the text,”His actions were first too quick and then too quiet. Sometimes his voice, slow and trembling with fear, quickly changed to a strong, heavy, carefully spaced, too perfectly controlled manner.” The author shows he had very fast tone changes in his voice and showed the dialogue that he said to show how he is frightened and very skittish. The sequence of events contributes to making a good ghost story by the sequence of events building suspense in the different situations the characters are put in. As these situations are happening it slowly build up to the main event in the end of the passage. The passage “The Monkey Paws” makes a good ghost story by making suspense in the story. according to the text,”Listen to the wind,” said Mr. White who, having seen a mistake that could cost him the game after it was too late, was trying to stop his son from seeing it.” The author creates suspense in the story by talking about the winds of the night and the stories the man gave with a creepy tone to them. Also according to the text,”The matches fell from his hand. He stood motionless, not even breathing, until the knock was repeated. Then he turned and ran quickly back to his room, and closed the door behind him. A third knock sounded through the house.” The author uses imagery in the text to give the reader an image in their head of a sketchy old house with creepy noises to go along with it. The author uses characterization to portray some of the characters as secretive people hiding a missing piece of information that turns into a tragic event because of it. The sequence of events in this passage makes it a good ghost story by introducing the characters and building on the information of the paw until the son becomes too curious and makes a wrong choice to use the paw.

  13. The two stories “The Monkey’s Paw” and “To Be Taken a Grain of Salt” would make great ghost stories because they both create suspense. In “The Money’s Paw” it states, ” The candle, which had almost burned to the bottom, was throwing moving shadows around the room. When the candle finally went out, the old man, with an unspeakable sense of relief at the failure of the talisman, went slowly back back to his bed, and a minute afterward the old woman came silently and lay without movement beside him.” The way this quote creates suspense is how after the candle burnt out and after all the shadows the candle created wore down, a tall man who spoke no words slowly and awkwardly went to his bed only after, a woman, who spoke no words went to lie beside him without any movement afterwards. A quote from “To Be Taken a Grain of Salt” is, “My face was towards the only available door of communication with the dressing-room, and it was closed. My servant’s back was towards that door. While I was speaking to him I saw it open, and a man look in, who very earnestly and mysteriously beckoned to me.That man was the man who had gone second of the two along Piccadilly, and whose face was of the color of impure wax.” This quote shows that it creates suspense by the suspense of the door opening to a silent man who they didn’t quite know who was quite strange. In both stories, it leaves a suspense that gives the readers more to think about, leaves them wondering what will happen next.

  14. “The Monkey’s Paw” and “The Fall of the House of Usher” both make good ghost stories because they both include a couple things like characterization and imagery. To begin with, in “The Monkey’s Paw” it says,”The old man rose quickly and opening the door, was heard telling the new arrival how sorry he was for his recent loss. The new arrival talked about his sadness, so that Mrs. White said, “Tut, tut!” and coughed gently as her husband entered the room followed by a tall, heavy built, strong-looking man, whose skin had the healthy reddish colour associated with outdoor life and whose eyes showed that he could be a dangerous enemy. “ This shows characterization and imagery that helps make a good ghost story because it makes you feel like you know the character and if you were to see him in person you would be able to pick him out of a crowd. Another detail,”“I expect you’ll find the cash tied up in a big bag in the middle of your bed,” said Herbert, as he wished them goodnight, “and something horrible sitting on top of your wardrobe watching you as you pocket your ill-gotten money.” This detail from the story also shows imagery. It makes you think about something creepy. As soon as I read this detail personally I imagined a little demon chillin and just staring at me with blazing red eyes. Now onto how “The Fall of the House of Usher” does this,”Surely, no man had ever before changed as Roderick Usher had! Could this be the friend of my early years? It is true that his face had always been unusual. He had gray-white skin; eyes large and full of light; lips not bright in color, but of a beautiful shape; a well-shaped nose; hair of great softness — a face that was not easy to forget. And now the increase in this strangeness of his face had caused so great a change that I almost did not know him. The horrible white of his skin, and the strange light in his eyes, surprised me and even made me afraid. His hair had been allowed to grow, and in its softness it did not fall around his face but seemed to lie upon the air. I could not, even with an effort, see in my friend the appearance of a simple human being.” This detail shows characterization because it describes Usher in a way that makes you picture him in your mind, even if you don’t want to. Another detail,”I really believed that around the whole house, and the ground around it, the air itself was different. It was not the air of heaven. It rose from the dead, decaying trees, from the gray walls, and the quiet lake. It was a sickly, unhealthy air that I could see, slow-moving, heavy, and gray.” This detail shows imagery because it makes you imagine what he saw and felt. IT makes you feel how the air was different because of the surrounding of dead trees, gray walls and the lake. That is how both “The Monkey’s Paw” and “The Fall of the House of Usher” are good ghost stories, both have imagery and characterization

This makes a good ghost story when those features are described in a dark tone.

  15. “The Monkey’s Paw” and “The Fall of the House of Usher” make good ghost stories because they use imagery and create suspense. “The Monkey’s Paw” states,“And has anybody else wished?”continued the old lady. “The first man had his three wishes. Yes,” was the reply, “I don’t know what the first two were, but the third was for death. That’s how I got the paw.” This quote creates suspense by making the reader wonder what the man’s first two wishes were. It also makes the reader wonder how bad the outcome was to make him wish for death. “The Monkey’s Paw” also states, “In the brightness of the wintry sun next morning as it streamed over the breakfast table he laughed at his fears.” The use of imagery in the quote helps the reader get a better idea of what is going on in the story and get a better picture of it. “The Fall of the House of Usher” states, “I looked at this scene, I say with a complete sadness of soul which was no healthy, earthly feeling. There was a coldness, a sickening of heart, in which I could discover nothing to lighten the weight I felt.” This quote creates suspense by making the reader wonder what made the house so eerie and why he automatically got a bad feeling about it. That causes the reader to wonder what is going to happen with or because of the house later in the story. “The Fall of the House of Usher” states, “ I looked at the scene before me- at the house itself- at the ground around it- at the cold stone walls of the building- at it’s empty eye like windows- at a few dead trees…” The use of imagery in this quote helps the reader visualize what the house looked like and why it was so creepy to the man in the story.-Kalei Moore

    1. The monkeys paw makes a good ghost story by using characterization. This story uses characterization by showing off Mr. White’s stubbornness and eagerness to be right. He along with Mrs. White was very doubtful about if the story of the monkeys paw was really true. So he made a wish in a sarcastic way trying to prove sergeant major Morris wrong. In the story it states “her husband drew the talisman from his pocket, and all three laughed loudly at the sergeant major with a look of alarm on his face, caught him by the arm” this evidence shows all the three of them making fun of sergeant majors story because they believed it wasn’t true when in the end they were wrong. The story also says “Mr. White took the paw from his pocket and eyed it doubtfully.” This shows Mr. whites uncertainty.. But he is still going to make a wish because he wants to prove how silly the story is and how crazy sergeant major sounds. This would show off his stubbornness trait because he couldn’t listen to sergeant majors request not to make a wish just because he wanted to prove he was right.
The fall of the house of usher makes a good ghost story by using lots of imagery this story goes into full detail about pretty much everything causing a good picture in your head of what everything looks like making you feel as if you were really there. Early on in the story it describes the house and all of its creepy features the story states “there I could see reflected in the water a clear picture of the dead trees and he house, and its empty like windows.” This evidence explains some of the houses creepy features like all the dead trees surrounding it and the empty windows. since this was in the beginning of the story it kind of already sets the creepy tone. The story also goes into great detail on Rodrick ushers face it says “ he had grey- white skin; eyes large and full of light; lips not a bright color, but a beautiful shape; a well-shaped nose; hair of great softness; a face that was not easy to forget.” This quote is giving you a very good description of Rodrick’s face making it so you can get an idea in your head of what he looks like also helping set the creepy tone and helping you infer there is something wrong with Mr. Usher.l

  16. “The Monkey’s Paw” and “The Fall of the House of Usher” are good ghost stories because they use imagery and suspense to create a scary tone. The passage “The Monkey’s Paw” uses suspense to make the reader want to keep reading. The passage states, “‘The first man had his three wishes. Yes.’ was the reply, ‘ I don’t know what the first two were, but the third was for death. That’s how I got the paw.’” This quote shows that the author creates suspense because the story doesn’t tell what the other two wishes were. It makes the reader wonder what the monkey’s paw could have done that made the man wish death upon himself. The story “The Fall of the House of Usher” uses imagery to describe the places and people in the story. The passage states, “I looked at the scene before me – at the house itself – at the ground around it – at the cold stone walls of the building – at it’s empty eye-like windows – and at a few dead trees – I looked at this scene, I say, with a complete sadness of soul which was no healthy, earthly feeling.” This quote shows that the house looked eerie and gave the narrator a bad feeling. The text also states, “And now the increase in this strangeness of his face had caused so great a change that I almost did not know him. The horrible white of his skin, and the strange light in his eyes, surprised me and even made me afraid.” This quote describes Roderick Usher and how his features create a creepy tone for the whole story. 17. “The Monkey’s Paw,” and “The Fall of the House of Usher,” make a good ghost story because of the use of suspense and the way the author describes the text in a way to make the readers have a sudden desire to read on. In “The Monkey’s Paw,” it say,” Mr.White looked up sharply, just in time to see a knowing look between mother and son. The words died away on his lips, and he hid a guilty smile in his thin grey beard.” This quote creates suspense and is very descriptive by showing the hidden image of guilt within him, which then leads to eagerness within the reader to want to continue reading. In,” The Fall of the House of Usher,” it says,” It rose from the dead, decaying trees, from the gray walls, and the quiet lake. It was a sticky, unhealthy air that I could see, slow-moving, heavy, and gray.” This quote proves my answer as well, because of the brilliant word choice, it creates a dark atmosphere to linger within the readers mind with the often occurrence of dark and decay, it definitely causes a gloomy effect but with suspense and many detailed and descriptive words, it creates a good ghost story.

  18. The short stories “The Monkey’s Paw” and “The Fall of the House of Usher” make good ghost stories because they describe how the the character feel, the suspense, and the setting of the story. In the story “The Monkey’s Paw” it says, “The way he told the story showed that he truly believed it and his listeners became aware that their light laughter was out of place and had hurt him a little……’Better let it burn,’ said the soldier sadly, but in a way that let them know he believed it to be true.” This shows the soldiers true feelings about the paw and how it hurt him. By the may he speaks it shows that he knows what he wished for came true and when he wants it to burn it it shows that he doesn’t like it and makes matters worse then better. This leads the ready to wondering why he wants it gone and how the wishes caused him grief. In the story “The Fall of the House of Usher” it says, “ There, I could see reflected in the water a clear picture of the dead trees, and of the house and its empty eye-like windows….. It rose from the dead, decaying trees, from the gray walls, and the quiet lake. It was a sickly, unhealthy air that I could see, slow-moving, heavy, and gray.” The way the author describes the setting gives the reader the image that the house has a creepy feel and that something bad will happen there. With the gloomy air and dead trees you can tell that the man who arrived at the house felt uneasy about being there. The way the house and the land around it is makes the ready wonder why it is like that and how it will affect the story.

  19. The story “The Fall of the House of Usher”, makes a good ghost story because of the imagery that is included. The story uses descriptive words like “weakly” and “ghastly” to express their points throughout the story. This story allows you to picture the story in your head while reading. For example the short story states , “ There was no door, no window; and no light or fire burned; yet a river of light flowed through it, filling it with a horrible, ghastly brightness.” In this example we can picture the room that the characters are in at that moment. The room is described as bright, but nothing in the room to display that light that they are shown. Along with that, “The Monkey’s Paw”, another short story is good as well. In this story it is shown through sequence of events. For instance the story says, “ They dirty, dried-up little paw was thrown on the cabinet with a carelessness which indicated no great belief in what good it could do… ‘ I – was asked to call, ‘ he said at last, and bent down and picked a piece of cotton from his trousers. ‘ I come from Maw and Meggins.’ The old lady jumped suddenly, as in alarm, ‘ Is anything the matter?’ she asked breathlessly. ‘Has anything happened to Herbert? What is it? What is it?’…. ‘ He was caught in the machinery,’ said the visitor at length in a low voice.” In this example, it is shown that the monkey’s paw is thrown without care on a cabinet. Not long after that a stranger shows up at the house and gives the family the news that Herbert was injured badly in a machinery accident. This proves that the sequence of events is powerful here because it shows that the monkey’s paw really did have good luck, like the legend said it did. In conclusion, these two stories using imagery and sequence of events make great ghost stories.

  20. The “Monkey’s Paw” is a good ghost story because the author describes the setting as cold and wet, he/she also mentions that the characters live in the middle of the woods. When the author mentions this, it creates a spooky/creepy setting. The author sets the tone by making the characters Mrs.White, Mr.White and their son question Sergeant-Major Morris about the Monkey’s Paw. When the characters draw attention to the paw, it makes the reader wonder what is so special about it. In the story it says, ‘“The first man had his three wishes. Yes,” was the reply, ‘I don’t know what the first two were, but the third was for death. That’s how I got the paw.’” When Sergeant- Major Morris tells the tale about the paw’s previous owner, this makes the reader realize the evil that is behind the paw. This creates the feeling of fright and worry, which makes the reader want to continue reading to see what happens to the characters. In “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving, it says, “They are given to all kinds of marvelous beliefs; are subject to trances and visions; and frequently see strange sights, and hear music and voices in the air.” This makes the setting seem magical and dark, and it shows how the town is cursed. The author, Washington Irving, also writes about a dark spirit that is described as “a figure on horseback without a head”. The author uses his words to build suspense when he writes about the Headless Horseman. In the story is says, “However wide awake they may have been before they entered that sleepy region, they are sure, in a little while, to inhale the witching influence of the air, and begin to grow imaginative—to dream dreams, and see apparitions.” This builds suspense for the reader by showing him/her how the people of the town are cursed and could potentially be in danger.

  22. “The Monkey’s Paw” and “The Fall of the House of Usher” make good ghost stories because they include things that make the stories suspenseful and still have a creepy and sad mood to it. According to the passage “The Monkey’s Paw” it states,” The old man rose quickly and opening the door, was heard telling the new arrival how sorry he was for his recent loss. For example, sadness, and the dangerous enemy are words that create that creepy and sad mood. According to the passage “The Fall of the House of Usher” it states, “I looked at the scene before me-at the house itself – at the ground around it-at the stone cold walls-of the building- at its empty eye-like windows-and at a few dead trees-I looked at the scene, I say, with a complete sadness of soul which was no healthy, earthly feeling. There was a coldness a sickening of the heart in which I could discover nothing to lighten the weight I felt. What was it, I asked myself, what was it that was so fearful, so frightening in my view of the house of Usher?” This quote creates suspense and a creepy and sad mood to the story because it makes the reader wonder why the house is so frightening to the character in the story. Also, the author uses creepy and sad words all throughout the story which creates an eerie feeling/mood. For example, words like stone cold, empty, dead, sadness, coldness, and sickening. All these words create not only that creepy feeling but help further the suspense in the story.

  23. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and The Monkeys Paw was good Ghost stories because the created suspense . The Legend of sleepy Hollow was because how the author used the community around Ichabod to show have they believed and fear the old legends, witchcraft and ghostly stories. Plus how the people in their community claimed to have had personal encounters with the legends main characters, mainly the headless horseman. Also they created suspense because they used characterization to show how Ichabod was a guy who was very talented but who had an overactive imagination that often led him to believe the unbelievable, that could get him into trouble. This again was a good ghost story because the author would leave you to make your own decision of what it meant and if it were truly happen like the legend says or if there was an underlying story. The legend is full of mysteries and unanswered questions. This leads to prove the the theme of “ be careful to not let your imagination take over.” Another Good ghost story was The Monkeys Paw because it told a mysterious backstory with a broken soldier and how his warning was not taken seriously which led to much pain, which added later to the future suspense. The author use characterization and imagery to further the comprehension of the thinking and unbelief of Mr. and Mrs. White and how they lived with their lives before there mistakes. That led to prove the theme of the story , “ Be careful what you wish for, you may receive it.”

  24. The stories “To be Taken With a Grain of Salt” and “The Monkey’s Paw” make good ghost stories from the use of characterization as well as sequence of events. In the short story “The Monkey’s Paw,” characterization is used to help add to the story. The old woman is developed to be seen as a hopeful character who is greatly upset over her son’s passing. This helps move the story along and adds to the intrigue the reader feels to continue with the story. The story says, “ ‘No,’ she cried excitedly; ‘We’ll have one more. Go down and get it quickly, and wish our boy alive again.’ ” This shows a hope that the monkey’s paw is seen as a chance to bring back her son. This further unravels the story adding suspense and affecting the rest of the story. The story “To be Taken With a Grain of Salt” uses sequence of events to help make it a good ghost story. It starts by giving an undisclosed setting, not giving specifics, hooking in the reader to find out more, and once again building the suspense. This is an important part of ghost stories. The story says, “In what I am going to relate I have no intention of setting up, opposing, or supporting, any theory whatsoever.” It leaves a plot hole on several details which are not essential but leave you wondering. Whenever suspense builds it keeps you reading and this story’s sequence of events continue to keep the suspense going. The figure’s name is never revealed along with the murderer’s, leaving us to question who these people were and if these events were possibly true. Characterization and sequence of events are both defining features for a good ghost story.

  25. “The Monkey’s Paw” and “The Fall of the House of Usher” both make good ghost stories because they both use amazing imagery .”The Monkey’s Paw “ says many good uses of figurative language. One way it uses figurative language is , Mr. White describes the weather outside as “beastly, slushy, . . . Pathway’s a bog, and the road’s a torrent.” Ghost stories are always better if they are told on the setting of a dark night. Shortly after that it it says “Outside, the wind was higher than ever, and the old man started nervously at the sound of a door banging upstairs.” Also with the narrator pointing out that the characters live in the middle of the dark woods and when you think of living in the woods you think of spooky and wild. This makes a good ghost story because it makes the overall mood of the story spooky. “The Fall of the House of Usher” is a good ghost story because Edgar Allen Poe’s use of imagery is important in creating tone in order to create a vivid world of horror both in mood and in plot. At the beginning of the story, the opening description of the dank tarn, and the fact that the narrator feels, “an iciness, a sinking, a sickening of the heart” makes the reader feel dreary and already spooked at the very beginning. In “ The Fall of the House of Usher “ when the character “Roderick Usher” is introduced he is paranoid and seems like he is scared of his own house. This is why both of these stories make great ghost stories.

  26. “The Monkey’s Paw” makes a good ghost story by using a frame story to further the context of the tale, which makes the story more suspenseful. You can see this in this piece of text, ‘“It had a spell put on it by an old fakir,” said the Sergeant-Major, “a very holy man. He wanted to show that fate ruled people’s lives, and that those who tried to change it would be sorry. He put a spell on it so that three different men could each have three wishes from it.”’ This shows that the author used a frame story to make the reader want to read more to see exactly what happens further in the text, which builds the suspense of the story. “The Fall of The House of Usher” uses the setting and very descriptive words to make the reader more creeped out, but also making the reader want to read on to see exactly what made the character have those feelings. In this piece of text you can see that the author uses both, “I looked at the scene before me — at the house itself — at the ground around it — at the cold stone walls of the building — at its empty eye-like windows — and at a few dead trees — I looked at this scene, I say, with a complete sadness of soul which was no healthy, earthly feeling. There was a coldness, a sickening of the heart, in which I could discover nothing to lighten the weight I felt.” The author uses words like coldness, sadness, and sickening to make the reader feel the way the character felt in that moment.

  27. Remi Hutchison – The Fall of the House of Usher and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
The short story “The Fall of the House of Usher,” shows how imagery helps set the mood and setting of the story. The story’s imagery gives the story a base, for example “It was a dark and soundless day near the end of the year, and clouds were hanging low in the heavens.” This was the first sentence in the first paragraph of the short story, and allows the reader to feel a particular mood before getting into the story’s spooky plot. This imagery helps create a good ghost story because of words like dark and soundless.

The short story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” shows how characterization helps describe certain features of a character. The story’s characterization gives the reader more details about a character to further set the mood of the story. The author writes about one character in the following quote: “He was a native of Connecticut; a State which supplies the Union with pioneers for the mind as well as for the forest, and sends forth yearly its legions of frontier woodsmen and country schoolmasters. The cognomen of Crane was not inapplicable to his person. He was tall, but exceedingly lank, with narrow shoulders, long arms and legs, hands that dangled a mile out of his sleeves, feet that might have served for shovels, and his whole frame most loosely hung together. His head was small, and flat at top, with huge ears, large green glassy eyes, and a long snipe nose, so that it looked like a weather-cock, perched upon his spindle neck, to tell which way the wind blew.” This example uses expressions like “feet that may be served for shovels” to create a “spooky” image of the character in the reader’s mind.

In “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” there is lots of imagery used to describe the valley as well as to give the people in the story character. For example, to describe the way Sleepy Hollow is almost secluded from the world the passage states,”They are like those little nooks of still water which border a rapid stream; where we may see the straw and bubble riding quietly at anchor, or slowly revolving in their mimic harbor, undisturbed by the rush of the passing current.” The story uses this to give the story an atmosphere of isolation which makes the setting feel much more real and believable as well as making the Headless Horseman scarier because of this feeling of being alone there with the ghost.. The stories also make use of characterization to its advantage. “The Monkey’s Paw” describes the soldier and his words vividly so the reader will remember his warnings of the danger of the paw. The text states, “His hand found the monkey’s paw, and with a little shake of his body he wiped his hand on his coat and went up to bed.” The paw having a mind of its own and drawing in herbert and the soldiers words helps to create suspense in the story which engages the reader so they want to know how the paw affects their life as it is considered evil. It becomes hard to stop and pulls them into the story with that suspense.

  29. “The Monkey’s Paw” and “The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow” are both good ghost stories because of the use of figurative language and imagery makes it more suspenseful. In “The Monkey’s Paw” it indicates “A fine crash from the piano greeted his words, broken by a frightened cry from the old man…Mr. White dropped his wife’s hand, and rising to his feet, stared with a look of horror at his visitor. His dry lips shaped the words, “How much?”“Two hundred pounds,” was the answer.Without hearing his wife’s scream, the old man smiled weakly, put out his hands like a blind man, and fell, a senseless mass, to the floor.” The author uses the phrases such as “look of horror,” and “and fell, a senseless mass, to the floor,” to emphasize horror or to give it an overall suspenseful feel of the story. In “The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow,” it says “The dominant spirit, however, that haunts this enchanted region, and seems to be commander- in-chief of all the powers of the air, is the apparition of a figure on horseback without a head….He would delight them equally by his anecdotes of witchcraft, and of the direful omens and portentous sights and sounds in the air, which prevailed in the earlier times of Connecticut; and would frighten them wofully with speculations upon comets and shooting stars; and with the alarming fact that the world did absolutely turn round, and that they were half the time topsy-turvy!” The Author’s use of figurative language such as “Dominant” and “commander-in-chief” gives off a powerful and greatness of this apparition that also gives it a horror and suspense.

I think that “The Monkey’s Paw” creates suspense because during the chess game the wind was blowing and the family doesn’t know whats out there until they see Sergeant-major Morris come in to the house. “The Monkey’s Paw” and “The Fall of the House of Usher” using imagery makes the stories more creepy.

The story’s “The Monkeys Paw” and “The Lengend Of Sleepy Hallow” make good ghost story’s because they create suspense and are very descriptive. “The Monkeys Paw” states, “he heard the movement of the lock as she began to open it, and at the same moment he found the monkey’s paw, and frantically breathed his third and last wish.” This quotes creates suspense because it makes you want to learn what happens next saying things like “as she began to open it.” Also the wording gives the reader a good image of what’s going on. “The Legend of Sleepy Hallow” states “they are sure in a little time, to inhale the witching influence of the air, and begin to grow imaginative,to dream dreams, and see aspirations.” This creates suspense by showing some of the effects of the witch. This also shows the reader the setting and shows what’s happening very well.

  32. “The Monkey’s Paw” and “The Fall of the House of Usher” are good ghost stories because of the use of imagery and suspense. In “The Monkey’s Paw” it states, ““I wish for two hundred pounds,” said the old man clearly. A fine crash from the piano greeted his words, broken by a frightened cry from the old man. His wife and son ran toward him. “It moved,” he cried, with a look of horror at the object as it lay on the floor.” This shows that once he wished for two hundred pounds, the piano had a crash and scared the old man, his wife, and his son. It also states, “She was watching the mysterious movements of a man outside, who, looking in an undecided fashion at the house, appeared to be trying to make up his mind to enter. In mental connection with the two hundred pounds, she noticed that the stranger was well dressed, and wore a silk hat of shiny newness. Three times he stopped briefly at the gate, and then walked on again. The fourth time he stood with his hand upon it, and then with sudden firmness of mind pushed it open and walked up the path. Mrs White at the same moment placed her hands behind her, hurriedly untied the strings of her apron, and put it under the cushion of her chair.” This shows how the imagery creates suspense in the story by telling what happened with the mystery man. In “The Fall of the House of Usher”, it states, “I do not know how it was — but, with my first sight of the building, a sense of heavy sadness filled my spirit. I looked at the scene before me — at the house itself — at the ground around it — at the cold stone walls of the building — at its empty eye-like windows — and at a few dead trees — I looked at this scene, I say, with a complete sadness of soul which was no healthy, earthly feeling.” This evidence shows that the imagery creates suspense by describing how the house of Usher looks creepy and sad. Also it says, ”I stopped my horse beside the building, on the edge of a dark and quiet lake. There, I could see reflected in the water a clear picture of the dead trees, and of the house and its empty eye-like windows. I was now going to spend several weeks in this house of sadness — this house of gloom.” This explanation of the setting using imagery shows that the house was not a pleasant place to stay at.

  33. The stories “The Monkey’s Paw” and “The Fall of the House of Usher” by Edgar Allan Poe, make good ghost stories. As the author is telling the stories, they set a “hair-raising” tone by creating suspense and describing an eerie and gloomy setting. In the story, “The Monkey’s Paw” the author helps give an eerie feel by setting in a suspenseful/ uncertain situation. An example is in the text “The Monkey’s Paw” it states, “But her husband was on his hands and knees feeling around wildly on the floor in search of the paw. If only he could find it before the thing outside got in. The knocks came very quickly now echoing through the house, and he heard the noise of his wife moving a chair and putting it down against the door. He heard the movement of the lock as she began to open it, and at the same moment he found the monkey’s paw, and frantically breathed his third and final wish. The knocking stopped suddenly, although the echoes of it were still in the house. He heard the chair pulled back, and the door opened. A cold wind blew up the staircase, and a long loud cry disappointment and pain from his wife gave him the courage to run down to her side, and then to the gate. The streetlight opposite shone on a quiet and deserted road.” The author builds a suspenseful tone by having a fast paste scene, by describing a fast knocking on the door, the author also gives a sense of nervousness from Mr.White by describing how he is frantically looking for the paw.

The story, “The Fall of the House of Usher” by Edgar Allan Poe gives an eerie and gloomy feel to the story by giving a descriptive idea of the Usher house. The text “The Fall of the House of Usher” states “I looked at the scene before me-at the house itself-at the ground around it-at the cold stone walls of the building-at its empty eye-like windows-and at a few dead trees- I looked at this scene, I say, with a complete sadness of soul which was no healthy, earthly feeling. There was a coldness, a sickening of the heart, in which I discovered nothing to lighten the weight I felt. What was it, I asked myself, what was it that was so fearful, so frightening in my view of the house of Usher?” The author Edgar Allan Poe helps build suspense by describing his view/thought of the house upon first seeing it. The author uses words like fearful, coldness, and sickening. Edgar Allan Poe also builds an internal conflict with the character Roderick Usher which also makes the story a good ghost story. The author does this by having the character deal with an illness which makes him believe that the Usher house has a strong hold on his soul. This illness also messes with his vision, hearing, and sense of smell. Which messes with his character and makes him paranoid. .

  34. “The Monkey’s Paw” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” both show a great example of imagery, characterization, and sequence of events and how they contribute to the development of the theme(s). In “The Monkey’s Paw” the main theme is that if you interfere with fate you will have consequences. Some specific examples of evidence that supports this theme is, “ ‘I wish for two hundred pounds,’ said the old man clearly”… “ ‘He was caught in the machinery,’ said the visitor at length in a low voice.”… “ ‘Two hundred pounds,’ was the answer.” These pieces of evidence show how the the sequence of events contribute to the development of the theme. The first piece of evidence shows how Mr. White wished on the monkey’s paw that he would gain 200 pounds. This is how Mr. White interfered with fate by wishing on the monkey’s paw. The second piece of evidence shows the consequence that Mr. White had to pay for messing with fate. His consequence was that his Herbert had to die for him to get his money. Therefore, the third piece of evidence shows that after Herbert died he was able to get his 200 pounds from the company Herbert worked for. The theme of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” is all about superstition. The author uses very specific words to make the belief in superstition very scary. For example, “Sabbath stillness” “nightmare” and “haunted spots, and twilight superstitions.” These quotes show that the author uses descriptive words to set a scary and creepy tone. The theme goes hand-in-hand with this tone as superstition (in this case) is a very scary topic. The words sabbath stillness shows that it has an eerie silentness to the place. This would be very scary. Also, no one likes nightmares and they are scary, again creating this scary tone along with superstition. Finally, “haunted spots, and twilight superstitions,” it reveals this theme of superstition and keeps the tone of scarieness.

  35. Part one- The Monkey’s paw: This story makes a good ghost story through the use of characterization to develop the theme. it says in the text when the soldier tells the man that when people interfere with their fate they also do so to their sorrow, it is part of the theme. Characterization develops this idea when the story portrays all the characters as being greedy and wanting their hearts desire that will make their life better. They didn’t look at the other side of things where the guy warned them that it was a curse to take the monkey’s paw. This also converts to the theme where they say that when you interfere with your fate you also interfere with your sorrow. Also a part of this is that the woman wanted more from her life and didn’t look at the joys that she already had. Part two- The Fall of the House of Usher: this makes a good ghost story because of the use of mystery or suspense. It first creates the suspense by saying that when the boy had arrived to help the family that he felt something strange or mysterious about the house. Going back to the question that says what makes a good ghost story, there is the part that all ghost stories that is mystery. All of the short stories have that using characterization, imagery, and mystery or suspense. The text states “What was it, I asked myself, what was it that was so fearful, so frightening in my view of the house of Usher?” This is also part of the story when suspense comes out. You don’t know what is going to happen and but you know it isn’t going to go well, and this makes a great ghost story

  36. “The monkey’s paw” and “legend of sleepy hallow” both make great ghost stories by the use of imagery and characterization, which leads to creating a great amount of suspense. In “The monkey’s paw” it claims the sergeant-major and his warnings repeatedly, giving him character. The story also uses a great amount of imagery that makes the author feel as though they are there. It states “‘better where you are,’ said the sergeant-major, shaking his head. He put down the empty glass and sighing softly, shook it again.” This causes the reader to feel as though they are actually there and allows them to get closer to the characters, leaving them wanting to read more and find out what happens next. In “ Legend if sleep hallow” the author uses imagery to help describe the valley and woods, resulting in the reader getting into a certain mood. It states “ A slanting ray lingered on the woody crests of the precipices that overhung some parts of the river, giving great depth to the dark-gray and purple of their rocky sides.” The way the author details this gives the reader an eerie feeling about the journey. It causes more suspense and leaves the reader reading further.

  37. “The Fall of the House of Usher”and “The Monkey’s Paw” both make a good ghost story by creating suspense and imagery. “The Fall of the House of Usher” states,” Roderick Usher, whom I had known as a boy, was now ill and had asked me to come help him. When I arrived I felt something strange and fearful about the great old stone house, about the lake in front of it, and about Usher himself.” This quote creates suspense by making a gloomy setting/plot and making things feel like there different than they were. “The Monkey’s Paw” states, “And has anybody else wished?” continued the old lady. “The first man had his three wishes. Yes,” was the reply,” I don’t know what the first two were, but the third was for death. That’s how I got the paw.” This creates suspense because it makes the reader want to know what the first two wishes were and why he chose the third one. Also “The Monkey’s Paw” says, “He heard the movement of the lock as she began to open it, and at the same moment he found the monkey’s Paw, and frantically breathed his third and last wish.” This quote creates suspense because it doesn’t automatically tell the reader what’s happening but it pull them in making them need to read on to find out what happens. The suspense makes the the plot come to motion to makes it excel the storyline, and makes the reader intrigued to carry on throughout the story.

  38. Felicity Gibson-The Fall of the House of Usher and The Monkey Paws make good ghost stories because of things such as figurative speech, imagery, suspense, description, and the setting. In the story, The Monkeys Paw story used very good description of the characters and imagery.According to The Monkeys Paws it states, “… as her husband entered the room followed by a tall, heavy built,strong-looking man, whose skin had the healthy reddish colour associated with outdoor life and whose eyes showed that he could be a dangerous enemy”. This is good description and imagery because it described the character very well and made me picture him in my mind. It made me think of a big strong man which helped me understand this character better. This was one of the ways it was a good ghost story because it set a picture in my mind as imagery is supposed to do that. The Fall of the House of Usher makes a good ghost story because of the setting. According to the text,” I stopped my horse beside the building on the edge of a dark and quiet lake. There I could see reflected in the water a clear picture of the dead trees, and of the house and its empty eye-like window”. This made the passage a good ghost story because it set a scary setting. It made me feel spooked and creeped out just like a ghost story is suppose to do. The story The Monkeys Paw makes a good ghost story because it creates suspense. According to the text it states, “Her husband spoke before he could answer. “There there mother,” he said hurriedly. “Sit down, and don’t jump to a conclusion. You’ve not brought bad news, I’m sure sir,” and eyed the other, expecting that it was bad news but hoping he was wrong”. The suspense had a big part in making the passage a good ghost story because it got me excited and eager to find out if the news that he had to tell was bad or good. The story had many other scenes that left me on a cliff hanger or gave me this feeling that I could not wait to read on. Lastly both stories use some kind of figure of speech to make this become a good ghost story. The Monkeys Paw uses figurative language to create a good ghost story. According to the passage it states, “ Then he sank into the chair and the old woman, with burning eyes, walked to the window and opened the curtains”. The phrase “burning eyes” is figurative because your eyes really don’t burn, it was just a good way of describing them because it makes the story seem more interesting and creepy. The Fall of the House of the Usher uses figurative languages also. According to the passage it states, “ It was the manner in which all this was said-it was the heart in it-which did not allow me to say no”. The phrase “it was the heart in it” is figurative language. The author was talking about a letter. A letter does not actually have a heart inside it. He was meaning the dedication, time, love, and kindness put into the letter. Overall the examples and details of figurative language, imagery, suspense, description, etc create a creepy and scary tone. The qualities of a good ghost stories are included in the passages I read which were The Monkeys Paw and The Fall of the House of Usher.

  39. One of the short stories I have chosen that makes a good ghost story is The Fall of the House of the Usher. This makes a fantastic story because right from the beginning it sucks you in by taking place in such a creepy, strange setting. It is interesting when he is describing how dark and sad the house looks from on top of his horse he is riding. The story says it has little life or beauty. You immediately want to keep reading to find out what is going to happen in such a place. You have to know what is inside! Also, his friend that sends him the letter makes you so curious to see what is wrong with him. What is his mysterious sickness of the mind, as he calls it? There are just so many questions that keeps you wondering. The suspense of it all, including the sister in the vault, is what made it a good ghost story for me. That and the disturbing behavior of the people in the house. I couldn’t imagine living my life like that!

In addition to The Fall of the House of the Usher, I also read The Monkey’s Paw. The reason that it makes a great ghost story is because it is also suspenseful. The setting makes it feel uneasy and eerie because the soldier describes it as being something that you really don’t want around. Another thing I found shocking was the one man’s third wish that was for death. It really makes you wonder how bad the Paw effected him. The paw was so frightening that one person even threw it into the fire because he didn’t want anyone else to have to deal with it. However, the worst thing about the paw was how it could be used for someone who was no longer alive. Bringing their son back from the dead and not knowing how he was going to behave towards them was very scary. It was so frightening that they were scared of their own son!

In the story “The Monkey’s Paw” it said,” I wish for two hundred pounds,” said the old man clearly…..Mr. White dropped his wife’s hand, and rising to his feet, started with a look of horror at his visitor. His dry lips shaped the words, “How much?” “Two hundred pounds,” was the answer.” In the situation in the story this quote was pulled from there was a legend about this monkey’s paw and man got 3 wishes if he was holding. Well the man in the story wished for money and everyone thought it wasn’t going to happen. But then this man shows up the next day bringing news there son had died and gave them the exact amount of money the man wished for. When I read through this story and through this part it started to make the story intense. How in the world did this happen is a question that popped in my head. To top it off there son died because of the wish and this made the story intense and created a intense atmosphere in the story. In the story “To Be Taken With A Grain Of Salt” it says,”My face was towards the only available door of communication with the dressing-room, and it was closed. My servant’s back was towards that door. While I was speaking to him I saw it open, and a man look in, who very earnestly and mysteriously beckoned to me.” When I read this part of the story it creeped me out but it also made me suspicious. It made me wonder what did this dude see. What’s going on, why is he seeing this was going through my head. The man in the story was looking at a door perfectly shut open when the only two people that were in the house were standing together. It created a suspense atmosphere for me. It created a lot of questions for me as well and I think this makes for a great ghost story. These two stories were good ghost stories because of the authors of the stories creating a atmosphere of suspense and intensity.

This quote creates suspense by making the reader wonder why the women was crying wildly for the paw and why it mattered so much at the time. “The Fall of the House of Usher” states, “ I looked at the scene before me — at the house itself — at the ground around it — at the cold stone walls of the building — at its empty eye-like windows—and at a few dead tree”. This quote shows the use of imagery by describing the setting of where the story takes place creating a visual image of “sad ” and “ spooky” while the boy was looking at the house. “The Fall of the House of Usher” also states, “She is coming — coming to ask why I put her there too soon. I hear her footsteps on the stairs. I hear the heavy beating of her heart.” Here he jumped up and cried as if he were giving up his soul: “I TELL YOU, SHE NOW STANDS AT THE DOOR!! ”. 43. The two stories “The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow” and “ To be Taken with a Grain of Salt” both make great ghost stories using characterization, suspense, and imagery. In “The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow” it states,”As Ichabod approached this fearful tree, he began to whistle; he thought his whistle was answered—it was but a blast sweeping sharply through the dry branches.” This quote creates a type of suspense because he’s traveling on a road by himself at midnight after hearing all of these ghost stories that had happened right where he was approaching. So in spite of Ichabod’s fear he starts to whistle to himself to calm his nerves but hears someone else in the making, but he doesn’t know who, or where that person might be. That gives the reader crazy nerves and suspense while reading because they don’t know what is going to happen they can only assume that bad things are going to happen in the mere future for Ichabod. This quote also shows characterization because it describes the tree as fearful, and in some sorts scary. The author had great word choice too like instead of putting fearful noise echoing through the woods he wrote”a blast sweeping sharply through the dry branches.” he doesn’t just give a puny description he gives a full on suspense packed phrase on one noise in the distance. “To be Taken with a Grain of Salt” says,” My servant’s back was towards that door. While I was speaking to him I saw it open, and a man look in, who very earnestly and mysteriously beckoned to me. That man was the man who had gone second of the two along Piccadilly, and whose face was of the colour of impure wax.” This quote helps make a good ghost story because it creates suspense in the reader because no one knows who this man is that walked into his room very silently without saying a word. The suspense continues throughout the story because you don’t know who this character is and why he is doing what he is doing. It also creates foreshadowing for later on because this mystery man shows back up when the man is beckoned to serve on the jury for a murder trial. Come to find out the mystery man was the victim of the murder and wants the murderer to get what he deserves.-Anna Wills

  44. “The Monkey’s Paw” and “The Fall of the House of Usher” are good ghost stories because they use imagery and give details about how the characters feel about certain things to create a spooky and kind of sad setting and tone. “The Monkey’s Paw” states, “The way he told the story showed that he truly believed it and his listeners became aware that their light laughter was out of place and had hurt him a little.” This shows that it is a good ghost story because of how the author describes the soldiers feelings towards the monkey paw and it makes the readers see that the others laughing at the soldier’s story hurt him so the tone of his story is sad. “The Fall of the House of Usher” states, “It was a dark and soundless day near the end of the year, and clouds were hanging low in the heavens. All day I had been riding on horseback through country with little life or beauty; and in the early evening I came within view of the House of Usher.” This shows that it is a good ghost story because the author gives you lots of imagery and it gives off a spooky and kind of sad setting.

In “The Fall of the House of Usher” it provides “The great door to which he was pointing now slowly opened. It was the work of the rushing wind, perhaps — but no — outside that door a shape did stand, the tall figure, in its grave-clothes, of the lady Madeline of Usher.” The author uses imagery to provide a feeling of mystery and added suspense to make the reader want to keep reading.

  46. What Makes a Good Ghost Story?

There are many ways to make a good ghost story. It has to be thrilling, stressful, you get nervous and have goosebumps, chills down your spine, and your body temperature might go up. But the story has to have the use of imagery, characterization, and the sequence of events have to contribute to the development of the theme for that to happen. The reading passages, “Legand of Sleepy Hollow”, and “The Monkey’s Paw”, leads to all of those effects above.
First of all, it says from, “Legand of Sleepy Hollow”, “He was gaunt and shagged, with an ewe neck and a head like a hammer; his rusty mane and tail were tangled and knotted with burs; one eye had lost his pupil, and was glaring and spectral; but the other had the gleam of genuine devil in it.” This contributes to making a good ghost story because it tells us intense details about the horse, Gunpowder and it helps us imagine the horse in real life to scare us. This thrills us because we think of it actually being in real life and if we could see it, our feelings would be really vigorous.
Second of all, from “The Monkey’s Paw”, it says, “ The new arrival talked about his sadness,so that Mrs. White said, “Tut, tut!” and coughed gently as her husband entered the room followed by a tall, heavy built, strong-looking man, whose skin had the healthy reddish color associated with outdoor life and whose eyes showed that he could be a dangerous enemy.” This contributes to making a good ghost story because of the in-depth details about this scary looking stranger man. And again, it helps us imagine the Sergeant-Major Morris. This character in the story introduces the Monkey Paw, and that leads to magic and wishing, and that was the whole main point of the reading passage. And that whole point was stressful because of the wishes they had to make. So, that’s why these two stories make a good ghost story.

In the story “Legend of Sleepy Hallow” it states, “Certain it is, the place still continues under the sway of some witching power, that holds a spell over the minds of the good people, causing them to walk in a continual reverie.” This quote creates suspense by making you wonder what the “witching power” is and why does it have a hold on the good peoples minds. The suspense of this story gives you an anxious desire to read more of the story to see what is going to happen next. In the story “The Monkey’s Paw” it states, “He heard the movement of the lock as she began to open it, and at the same moment he found the monkey’s paw, and frantically breathed his third and last wish.” This quote creates suspense because it does not tell the reader what exactly happened, also it makes the reader wonder what his wishes were and what did the monkey’s paw have to do with it. The suspense also makes you wonder what is likely going to happen further on in the story. The suspense of this story leaves the reader hanging making them eager to read more and more of the story to find out what is going to happen next. In conclusion “Legend of Sleepy Hallow” and “The Monkey’s Paw” make good ghost stories because the suspense created throughout the stories.

  48. “The Fall of the House of Usher” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” both make good ghost stories because they both have imagery and characterization that help make them creepy. In “The Fall of the House of Usher”, it was described as a “dark and soundless day”, and it also says “I looked at the scene before me — at the house itself — at the ground around it — at the cold stone walls of the building — at its empty eye-like windows — and at a few dead trees”. These show that the narrator is in a creepy setting by using words like “dark”, “soundless”, “empty”, and “dead”. It uses characterization by describing the characters, like Roderick Usher. In the text, it says, “He appeared not like a human being, but like a spirit that had come back from beyond the grave.” This shows that he was so sick he didn’t look well. It describes how he looks, and it helps readers visualize how he looks. One last thing from the text is, “outside that door a shape did stand, the tall figure, in its grave-clothes, of the lady Madeline of Usher. There was blood upon her white dress, and the signs of her terrible efforts to escape were upon every part of her thin form.” This makes the story a good ghost story because nobody expected her to come back. In “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”, it gives imagery to the characters and what is happening. Something from the text is, “There was, however, one tall, dry-looking old gentleman, with beetling eyebrows, who maintained a grave and rather severe face throughout: now and then folding his arms,” It gives details of what he looks like and what he does. These are both good ghost stories, and the imagery and characterization help make it like that.

  49. Kendra Johnson- What is considered a good ghost relies on many qualities. However, what is most important in a good ghost story is suspense and characterization. Both of these are greatly shown in “The Monkey’s Paw” and “To Be Taken With a Grain of Salt.” In “The Monkey’s Paw,” it says, “The knocks came very quickly now echoing through the house, and he heard the noise of his wife moving a chair and putting it down against the door. He heard the movement of the lock as she began to open it, and at the same moment he found the monkey’s paw, and frantically breathed his third and last wish.” In this quote, it shows the suspense in the story. It drags out the moment, gives it a creepy tone, and leaves the reader to wonder. The reader will have to read on, wanting to know what his third wish could be and what is truly on the other side of the door and the consequences of the wishes. It adds suspense throughout the story, making the story a good ghost story. In addition to this, “To Be Taken With a Grain of Salt,” says, “It stood for a few moments by the bedside of each of my eleven brother-jurymen, close to the pillow. It always went to the right-hand side of the bed, and always passed out crossing the foot of the next bed. It seemed from the action of the head, merely to look down pensively at each recumbent figure… It seemed to go out where the moonlight came in, through a high window, as by an aërial flight of stairs.” This quote shows the indirect characterization used to create a good ghost story. It gives the reader an uneasy vibe, without directly saying who this character is or anything about the character, merely describing the actions of the character. It also adds on to the suspense. What could this character want, why is he doing this, etc. This is what makes a good ghost story, suspense and characterization, as both help guide the story and leave the reader wanting more.

  50. There are many pieces that go into a good ghost story. Two of these pieces are the author’s use of characterization and imagery, to make the story suspenseful. Two texts that represent these are “The Monkey’s Paw” and “To Be Taken With a Grain of Salt”. In “The Monkey’s Paw” it states, “‘I wish for two hundred pounds,’ said the old man clearly. A fine crash from the piano greeted his words, broken by a frightened cry from the old man. His wife and son ran toward him. ‘It moved,’ he cried, with a look of horror at the object as it lay on the floor. ‘As I wished, it twisted in my hand like a snake.’” This quote demonstrates the use of characterization, because it showed the reader how the greediness of Herbert and Mr. White gave a negative impact on their lives. Imagery is also shown through “The Monkey’s Paw” to cause suspense. The text says, “He sat until he could no longer bear the cold, looking up from time to time at the figure of his wife staring through the window. The candle, which had almost burned to the bottom, was throwing moving shadows around the room.” The imagery of this quote demonstrates suspense, because of the cold and darkness of the room, and how it states how the almost burned out candle casts shadows throughout the room. “To Be Taken With a Grain of Salt” also has imagery to cause suspense. The text states, “In passing before my windows, they both stared up at me. I saw their two faces very distinctly, and I knew that I could recognize them anywhere. Not that I had consciously noticed anything very remarkable in either face, except that the man who went first had an unusually lowering appearance, and that the face of the man who followed him was of the colour of impure wax.” The imagery in this quote shows suspense, by mentioning of the first man having an ‘unusually lowering appearance’, causing the reader to question his thoughts. It also demonstrates suspense because of it describing the face of the second man as being ‘the colour of impure wax’, causing the reader to question this man’s feelings and motives. This text has characterization to cause suspense as well. The text says, “The foremost man often looked back over his shoulder. The second man followed him, at a distance of some thirty paces, with his right hand menacingly raised. First, the singularity and steadiness of this threatening gesture in so public a thoroughfare, attracted my attention; and next, the more remarkable circumstance that nobody heeded it.” This quote demonstrates suspense through characterization, because it explains the actions of two men walking down a street, one following the other. The actions of both men create suspense, because it explains the first man looking over his shoulder multiple times, as if he were wary of his surroundings, and the other man following behind him ‘menacingly’ raising his hand, as if preparing to do something, that the reader is left to figure out.

  51. The “monkeys paw” and the “Legend of sleepy Hollow” both are good ghost stories because in the “Monkeys paw” Morris creates suspense by saying, ““Better let it burn,” said the soldier sadly, but in a way that let them know he believed it to be true.” This is making suspense because no one knows why he is saying to let it burn and what it may do. Another line that makes suspense is, ” The knocks came very quickly now echoing through the house, and he heard the noise of his wife moving a chair and putting it down against the door. He heard the movement of the lock as she began to open it, and at the same moment he found the monkeys’s paw, and frantically breathed his third and last wish.” This makes it so you want to know what happens next and what his last wish was. In the “Legend of Sleepy Hallow” Imagery and figurative language show the Hallow and describe what it looks like. A example is, “They are like those little nooks of still water which border a rapid stream; where we may see the straw and bubble riding quietly at anchor, or slowly revolving in their mimic harbor, undisturbed by the rush of the passing current.” This kind of puts you in the story and makes you imagine what it was like in the setting of the hallow. Also it creates suspense by describing the figure of a headless horse man as shown here, “The dominant spirit, however, that haunts this enchanted region, and seems to be commander-in-chief of all the powers of the air, is the apparition of a figure on horseback without a head. It is said by some to be the ghost of a Hessian trooper, whose head had been carried away by a cannon-ball, in some nameless battle during the revolutionary war; and
who is ever and anon seen by the country folk, hurrying along in the gloom of night, as if on the wings of the wind. His haunts are not confined to the valley, but extend at times to the adjacent roads, and especially to the vicinity of a church at no great distance.” This creates suspense because you don’t know if anything is true about this or what could build out of this. This is what makes these two stories good ghost stories.

  52. The two stories, “the Monkey’s Paw” and, “Legend of Sleepy Hallow” both make great ghost stories because they both create suspense throughout the passage. The text, “The Monkey’s Paw”, states, “She broke off as the tragic meaning of the part about him not being in pain came to her. The man had turned his head slightly so as not to look directly at her, but she saw the awful truth in his face. She caught her breath, and turning to her husband, who did not yet understand the man’s meaning, laid her shaking hand on his. There was a long silence.” This text evidence proves that this passage creates suspense because the author is drawing out a certain moment and event without giving all the details about what happened. This allows the reader to make a inference about what actually had happened to her son. This is also making the reader ask questions such as “what does he mean no more pain?” or “what happened to him?” which will hook the audience in making them want to continue on with the story to find out the truth of what happened. The text, “Legend of Sleepy Hollow” also states, “However wide awake they may have been before they entered that sleepy region, they are sure, in a little time, to inhale the witching influence of the air, and begin to grow imaginative, to dream dreams, and see apparitions.” This text evidence also creates suspense because it’s listing many effects of the “witching influence” that a few people in the sleepy hollow are feeling. Also the choice of words that the author is using is making the readers infer that there will eventually be a ghost further on into the passage. This making the reader want to continue reading to find out what happens further on in the story. Therefore both passages make great ghost because they create suspense throughout the entire text making the reader ask questions and continue reading. – dakota rowe

  53. Both, “The Monkey’s Paw,” and “To Be Taken With a Grain of Salt” are both good ghost stories because they build up their stories by using suspense throughout the story. In, “The Monkey’s Paw,” it states, “But her husband was on his hands and knees feeling around wildly on the floor in search of the paw. If only he could find it before the thing outside got in. The knocks came very quickly now echoing
through the house, and he heard the noise of his wife moving a chair and putting it down against the
door. He heard the movement of the lock as she began to open it, and at the same moment he found
the monkeys’s paw, and frantically breathed his third and last wish.” This proves how the story is suspenseful, by how it builds up the situation by the mother frantically attempting to open the door, of which she thinks of her dead son to be on the other side. Meanwhile, the father gets the monkey paw, realizing that something bad would come from the other side of the door, as their son died, wishing for two-hundred pounds. The situation gives off a suspenseful mood from how the author makes it so we don’t know if their son is on the other side of the door, and we don’t know what the father is going to do or wish for with the monkey paw in the situation, making the outcome unpredictable, a good way to give off suspense. In, “To Be Taken With a Grain of Salt” it states, “The murdered man at that time stood directly opposite the Jury-box, on the other side of the Court. As I took my place, his eyes rested on me, with great attention; he seemed satisfied, and slowly shook a great grey veil, which he carried on his arm for the first time, over his head and whole form. As I gave in our verdict ‘Guilty’, the veil collapsed, all was gone, and his place was empty.” I believe this creates suspense by how the final minutes of the trial gives the reader a thought to look over if he is guilty or innocent in the end. This scene could also create suspense, which how as the jury takes their place, right across from him, staring at him in the eyes with somewhat deep thought or attention, with a satisfied look. It makes it unknown if the man has accomplished something or something happened that he wanted to in his favor, and as he looks directly at the main character, creating some kind of external conflict between the two. – Logan Breeden

  54. The two stories “The Monkey’s Paw” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” make great ghost stories because they successfully manage to create suspense through the characters and their actions, and through certain events. For example in “The Monkey’s Paw” the passage created suspense by stating “His wife made no reply. She was watching the mysterious movements of a man outside in the street, who seemed to be trying to decide whether to open the gate and enter… Three times he paused at the gate and walked away. The fourth time he stopped and put his hand on the gate, then suddenly opened it and walked up the path.” This quote creates suspense because the readers are wondering why this strange man is walking back and forth trying to decide whether or not to enter, which at the same time creates an uneasy feeling do to the fact that this guy’s is just pacing around out there and we do not yet know his intentions. As well in ” The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” it states,”The stranger however, quickened his horse to an equal pace. Ichabod pulled up, and fell into a walk, thinking to lag behind – the other did the same.” This creates suspense because we know at this point that Ichabod is being followed, Which isn’t something that people would normally do.We also know that he is probably being followed by The Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow and we are only able to read on as the event draws on leaving us the readers in suspense, As we know something bad is about to happen, and knowing when setting bad is about to happen is half the fun of reading a ghost story.

Emily palmer- Monkey Paws and The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow make good ghost stories because They both contain figurative language which makes the stories more suspenseful. Evidence from the passage The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow is “The rider moves like a whirlwind and becomes a goblin rising in his stirrups.” This figurative language makes the story more suspenseful because it is describing the man’s point of view on seeing the headless horseman for the first time, making the story more interesting and creating suspense for what’s going to happen next.
The story Monkey Paws also has figurative language that keeps the story suspenseful such as “it twisted in my hand like a snake.” This piece of figurative language makes the story more suspenseful because it’s giving us a visual by using a snake to convey the overall meaning of what the author is trying to tell us. Making the story more interesting and makes the reader want to figure out what’s going to happen next.

Emily palmer- Monkey Paws and The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow make good ghost stories because They both contain figurative language which makes the stories more suspenseful. Evidence from the passage The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow is “The shadowy object of alarm and ghostly competitor the rider moves like a whirlwind and becomes a goblin rising in his stirrups”this figurative language shows suspense because its describing the headless horseman by saying things like the shadowy object or becomes a goblin making the story more suspenseful and interesting which also makes the reader want to read more. Without the figurative language it wouldn’t be as interesting and wouldn’t have much detail making it have less suspenseful.
The story Monkey Paws also has figurative language that keeps the story suspenseful such as “it twisted in my hand like a snake.” another piece of suspenseful evidence from Monkey Paws is “…china candlestick, was throwing pulsating shadows on the ceiling and walls” both of these evidence from monkey paws create suspense by explaining the situation using details. Such as the simile used in the first piece of evidence it twisted in my hand like a snake gives a better explanation than it just saying it twisted in my hand, making the story more interesting. In the second evidence it said that the candlestick was pulsating shadows which is also a more detailed way of saying the candles caused shadows making the story more interesting and suspenseful which makes the reader want to keep reading.

  57. The two ghost stories “The Monkey’s Paw” and “Legend Of Sleepy Hallow” makes a good ghost story because of the author’s choice of words and the way the author creates suspense throughout the story. In the ghost story “The Monkey’s Paw” the author says things like “the night was cold and wet” and “the small living room the curtains were closed and the fire burned brightly.” although the ghost story isn’t all that scary, the authors word choice still gives it a scary setting. The author create suspense in “The Monkey’s Paw” by saying, “He heard the movement of the lock as she began to open it, and at the same moment he found the monkeys’s paw, and frantically breathed his third and last wish.” This cite from the story creates suspense because it is letting the reader know what is going on, but also is not telling the reader everything which creates suspense leaving the reader wanting to read more and to wonder what is going to happen after he uses his last wish. In the ghost story “Legend Of Sleepy Hallow” the author creates suspense by stating in the text “They had now reached the road which turns off to Sleepy Hollow; but Gunpowder, who seemed possessed with a demon, instead of keeping up it, made an opposite turn, and plunged headlong down hill to the left.” This cite from the ghost story creates suspense by leaving the reader wondering what they are going to find down the road to Sleepy Hollow.

  58. Jacob Schultz What makes a good ghost story “Monkey’s Paw”
“Monkey’s Paw” makes a good ghost story because of the sequence of events that lead up to fear, unknown and suspense like when the aggressive knocks on the door slowly then became faster and more aggressive with her dead son behind the door. The sound of a heavy chair being drug across a dark house adds another feeling of creepiness to the story. The characterization of the wife/mother showed how desperate she was to get her son back at any cost. Even though her husband said “He has been dead for 10 days and I could only identify him by his clothes”. I believe that the theme of this story is be careful of what you ask for because you might not want what you recieve and might do anything to change it back.
“Sleepy Hollow” a good ghost story because of the imagery and characterization. One of the events in the story that starts making me feel creepy is when they are telling ghost stories late into the night when the room is dark and the only glow or light you see is the glow of the pipes. The way the story uses characterization of the “dominant spirit” causes the hair on the neck of the reader to rise in fear. The writer referrers to him as “then commander chief of all the power of the air”. They describe him as a man who rides headless on a horse after his head got taken by a cannonball in the revolutionary war and rides all night in search of his head. This kind of characterization brings fear to the reader.

When the subject of horror story’s come up I think of Sequence of events as well as mysteries such as Scooby Doo and many other cartoons I was terrified of Scooby Doo but I I’m getting off topic. Good horror story’s are made of mysteries, suspense, and sequence. The reason these story make good horror story’s is that they do more than that they add more details and care more for their character by giving them their own personality’s.

  60. The stories “The Monkeys Paw” and “Legend of Sleepy Hollow” make good ghost stories because both stories use excellent imaginary. “The Monkey Paw” uses imaginary by describing what is going on during that scene and going into details helping the reader picture what’s going on. In the passage it states “A cold wind blew up the staircase, and a long loud cry of disappointment and pain from his wife….” This creates the imagine in your head by the descriptive details. You can picture the scene of cold wind going up a staircase and you can also picture the a scream of disappointment and pain of a mother who was expecting her son to return from the grave.”Legend of Sleepy Hollow” makes a good ghost story because it uses imaginary also by describing the woods. In the passage it states “ Then, as he wended his way, by swamp and stream and awful woodland, to the farm-house where he happened to be quartered, every sound of nature, at that witching hour, fluttered his excited imagination: the moan of the whip-poor-will* from the hill-side; the boding cry of the tree-toad, that harbinger of storm; the dreary hooting of the screech-owl, or the sudden rustling in the thicket of birds frightened from their roost. The fire-flies, too, which sparkled most vividly in the darkest places.” This makes good imaginary because it describes the woods and the noises that are in the woods. It describes the croaking of the toads and the hooting of the owls. You can also picture the swamp and the woodlands with all the noises happening. You can also picture the fireflies lighting the woods and making it seems less scary almost like a calming sense but still making it seems scary.

  61. What makes “The Monkey’s Paw” and “Legends of Sleepy Hallow” good ghost stories is the sequence of events that creates suspense for the reader. The passage states “He heard the movement of the lock as she began to open it, and at the same moment he found the monkey’s paw, and frantically breathed his third and last wish.” Suspense is created in this quote by dragging out that moment, but not letting the reader know what happens next. Most readers would want to read on, to figure out what happens next, and come to find the next sequence of events. Also, this quote shows the author’s word choice in the story, and provides better imagery with what’s going on in the story. Such as this phrase, “frantically breathes his third and last wish”, shows Mr. White was saying this hurriedly. In “Legend of Sleepy Hallow”, it states, “Certain it is, the place still continues under the sway of some witching power, that holds a spell over the minds of the good people, causing them to walk in a continual reverie.” Suspense is created in this quote by making you wonder what the “witching power” is and why does it get a hold of good peoples minds. The suspense in this story makes you anxious to know what happens next, and so you have a sudden urge to continue, and read on. Both of these stories are great ghost stories, because they use suspense, and try to get you to read on and on and on.

  62. In ”The Monkey’s Paw” nothing is free. In this story the price of the wish for two hundred pounds to pay off the house was the death of their son. “We’ll have one more. Go down and get it quickly, and wish our boy alive again.” Characteristics of the wife help the development of the theme because if the wife had been able to accept that nothing comes for free, she would not have brought the “monster” to their home. In this ghost story through the use of sequence of events that contributed to it being a good ghost story, Mr. Morris says “I don’t know what the first two were, but the third was for death. That’s how I got the paw.”, and Mr.White says “I wish for two hundred pounds”, The sequence of events in this story even though they knew what happened to another wisher, they risked the consequences. This makes it a good ghost story because the story foresights how consequential the wish of the paw could be. This is how the theme of “The Monkey’s Paw” with the use of characteristics and sequence of events made this a good ghost story.
In “To Be Taken With A Grain Of Salt” the theme is people will get what is earned or deserved in the end. In this story the reason the Ghost deserved justice is because he was murdered and the murderer earned the hauntings and punishment of hanging. … “‘Derrick, could you believe that in my cool senses I fancied I saw a—-‘ As I there laid my hand upon his breast, with a sudden start he trembled violently, and said, ‘O Lord yes sir! A dead man beckoning!’” The imagery in this sentence makes this a good ghost story because it helps the reader visualize how the narrator is being pulled into the haunted experience of the ghost’s murder ….and the sensation was accompanied with a peculiar shiver which started the chair from its position… I saw two men on the opposite side of the way…The foremost man often looked back over his shoulder. The second man followed him… with his right hand menacingly raised. First, the singularity and steadiness of this threatening gesture in so public a thoroughfare, attracted my attention” and also “‘My Lord, I knew I was a doomed man when the Foreman of my Jury came into the box. My Lord, I knew he would never let me off because, before I was taken, he somehow got to my bedside in the night, woke me, and put a rope round my neck.’” This sequence of events helps the development of the theme for the early experience of the narrator with the ghost showing what had happened, to the reveal of the murderer’s punishment. This how the theme of “To be taken with a grain of salt” with the help of sequence of events and imagery makes it a good ghost story.

  63. One story that made a good ghost story was “ The Monkey’s Paw ”. It was a good ghost story because it used very good imagery when describing the over weighted chair being dragged by Ms. White to open the door thought to be her dead son. It also described characterization by showing how the mother will even risk it all just to get her son back from the dead, even if it means putting her own life in danger. The sequence of events develops to the development of the theme because when Mr. White wished for 200lbs. And they received it after having to sacrifice something of their own, their son. This is supported by the following,” ‘You’re afraid of your own son,’ she cried struggling. ‘Let me go. I’m coming, Herbert; I’m coming.’” This shows how Ms. White went from being almost carefree to becoming very desperate to bring her son Herbert back and failing miserably. Another story that makes a good ghost story would be “The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow” because the story keeps developing more of its creepy aspects as you get to the main point or problem. And this helps the reader interpret the fact the town has a spooky and creeping tone to it, and that the main character meets the creature during the part of the story where it has the most interest and purpose of the reading. This provides a clear look of what the town is full of such as mysterious creatures. The author uses the unknown to lure the reader and give them a scare to leave them upon a cliff and there hanging waiting for the climax to hit.

  64. Maddi Hudson – What Makes a Good Ghost Story?
Both “The Monkey’s Paw” and “To Be Taken With A Grain of Salt” By Charles Dickens make good ghost stories, because imagery and suspense are incorporated very well throughout each reading. In “To Be Taken With A Grain of Salt” this quote is creating imagery of the man’s appearance which is important later on in the story, “I saw their two faces very distinctly, and I knew that I could recognize them anywhere. Not that I had consciously noticed anything very remarkable in either face, except that the man who went first had an unusually lowering appearance, and that the face of the man who followed him was of the color of impure wax.” In “To Be Taken With A Grain of Salt” the text states, “My face was towards the only available door of communication with the dressing-room, and it was closed. My servant’s back was towards that door. While I was speaking to him I saw it open, and a man look in, who very earnestly and mysteriously beckoned to me.That man was the man who had gone second of the two along Piccadilly, and whose face was of the color of impure wax.” This is creating suspense, because want to know what is behind the door and why. The text states in “The Monkey’s Paw”, “She broke off as the tragic meaning of the part about him not being in pain came to her. The man had turned his head slightly so as not to look directly at her, but she saw the awful truth in his face. She caught her breath, and turning to her husband, who did not yet understand the man’s meaning, laid her shaking hand on his. There was a long silence.” The quote created suspense that leaves readers wondering what had happened to her son once she realized that he had passed away and if his death had anything to do with the wish that the old man had made earlier in the story. This quote creates imagery in the story it helps the reader, build a mental picture of what Sargent Major Morris looks like in the story. “Her husband entered the room followed by a tall, heavy built, strong-looking man, whose skin had the healthy reddish color associated with outdoor life and whose eyes showed that he could be a dangerous enemy.”

  65. The passages “The Monkey Paws” and “The Fall of the House of Usher” would make good ghost stories because of the authors use of different mechanisms to interpret and describe the setting and the feelings in the story. “The Monkey Paws” would make a good ghost story because the author creates suspense in the story as do many ghost stories. The passage states, “‘Listen to the wind,’ said Mr. White who, having seen a mistake that could cost him the game after it was too late, was trying to stop his son from seeing it.” This line from the story shows the author building suspense by describing the winds through a character and showing Mr. White trying to hide the mistake he saw from his son. The text also states,” The matches fell from his hand. He stood motionless, not even breathing, until the knock was repeated. Then he turned and ran quickly back to his room, and closed the door behind him. A third knock sounded through the house.” This quote from the text also shows the suspense the author builds throughout the story by using key words to convey an image for the reader and gives the story a creepy tone and ghostly like setting. The passage “The Fall of the House of Usher” would make a good ghost story because of the authors choice in words that convey a depressing, dark and creepy feeling to the story that occurs in a lot of ghost stories. The passage states, “His actions were first too quick and then too quiet. Sometimes his voice, slow and trembling with fear, quickly changed to a strong, heavy, carefully spaced, too perfectly controlled manner.” This line from the passage shows the fear that the character felt in the story and the author describes this to convey the feeling to the reader. This also creates suspense for the reader because of the characters skittish and fearful actions and feelings. The text also states,”I looked at the scene before me — at the house itself — at the ground around it — at the cold stone walls of the building — at its empty eye-like windows — and at a few dead trees — I looked at this scene, I say, with a complete sadness of soul which was no healthy, earthly feeling.” This quote from the passage shows how the author uses words to convey an image to the reader in their mind while reading that is very creepy and ghost like. It gives the reader the feelings that the characters have in the story much like how ghost stories build suspense and give an eerie feel to the story and reader. The passages “The Monkey Paw” and “The Fall of the House of Usher” both would make good ghost stories bc of the suspense that is built through words and imagery the author interprets into the story.

  66. What makes the stories “The Monkeys Paw” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” good ghost stories is the sequence of events and suspense. They give you background in each story, such as in the Monkey’s Paw “‘ An old fakir put a spell on it. He was a very holy man and he wanted to show that fate rules people’s lives, and that to interfere with fate only caused deep sadness. He put a spell on it so that three separate men could each have three wishes from it.’” The background is given to the reader in the beginning of the story, so that they will be able to understand better later in the story. In “ The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” it leads up to the Headless horseman chasing after Ichabod Crane, starting wit why he was in Sleepy Hollows, events leading up to the night of him being chased, and finally to him being chased by the headless horse and leaving Sleepy Hollows.

  67. What makes a good ghost story ? I have thought about this extensively and I have come to the conclusion that in the story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” the author explains the characters with great depth. When he explains the main character “Ichabod crane”, Irving explained him has a tall lanky male, with long arms and legs, narrow shoulders, and hands that stretched a mile long. Another contributing factor I thought made this a good ghost story, was the fact that fiction came to life when they were sharing stories. At the party they were sharing stories about the headless horse man, no one was expecting the stories to be real, but only a hoax. Ichabod found that to be very true, I think that is what makes these ghost stories so great. The other ghost story I read was “The Monkeys Paw ” the authors use of suspense builds a reasoning for a reader to read . The excerpt from the passage“‘Listen to the wind,’ said Mr. White who, having seen a mistake that could cost him the game after it was too late, was trying to stop his son from seeing it.” this section from the text creates anxiety because Mr. White was trying to let you suspect something bad may have happened with out directly saying what had happened. These are two traits that i think make a compelling ghost story

  68. What makes a ghost story good? Well in my opinion a good ghost story must include an object
or place of mystery. As in the story called “The monkeys paw” In witch this story has an object of mystery and that would be the monkeys paw. The monkeys paw is just a paw which allows people to have three wishes but one day when a man made a wish it had a terrible outcome. This ghost story made me more interested by it because it had mystery and made me want to here more about the paw and have more of a background story. And therefore All a good ghost story needs is an object , person, or place of mystery. Also in all the other passages I have read they are the definition of a good ghost story because they keep you interested in the story and makes the appearance creepy but interesting witch also makes a good ghost story.

  69. I decided to interpret “to be taken with a grain of salt” through a feminist perspective. In this story there was a lack of women compared to men, all the main characters were men and there were barely any women were in this story. The few that are in the story were barely mentioned. The murderer was a man, which can be proven by this quote from the text “The murderer began asked by the judge, according to usage, weather he had anything to say before the sentence of death should be passed upon him.” Also, the main character, which was a jury member and another jury member next to him were both men, ”I touched the brother jury man whose place was next to me,and I whispered to him,”oblige me by counting us.” The last important character, the person that was murdered was a man too, ”The murdered man had seemed to have a cut through his neck.” This all proves that all the main characters of this text were men, and confirms that there was a lack of women in “to be taken with a grain of salt”, which leads us to believe this was based off a feminist perspective because the story contained mostly men and a lack women characters.

  70. Mason Guffey- Most everyone loves a great ghost story but, to me, there are two main characteristics that good ghost stories share. They all share fear, and suspense. These two characteristics are what set ghost stories apart from other well written stories.
Both stories that I read share fear built in within the characters of the stories. In “The Monkey’s Paw” lines 275-278 state, “ The paw fell to the floor. He looked at in fear. Then he fell trembling into a chair. With burning eyes his wife walked to the window and raised the blind.” This quote shows that his fear builds throughout the story and leads the reader to feel frightened as well. In “The Fall of The House of Usher” fear is demonstrated as well. For example, on page 11, the narrator describes his feeling of fear by, “ An irrepressible tremor gradually pervaded my frame; and, at length, there sat upon my very heart an incubus of utterly causeless alarm.” This quote shows how the narrator was stricken by a sense of fear within the house.
Suspense is another crucial element to a good ghost story. Suspense is used by authors to help capture the reader’s emotions and to get readers to continue closely reading these stories. One example of how suspense is used in “The Monkey’s Paw” begins on line 165 and says, “ I expect he will, ‘said Mr. White. ‘But the thing moved in my hand – I swear it.’” This quote makes the reader want to continue to see what will happen. In “The Fall of the House of Usher” suspense built throughout the story. One important portion throughout the story that interested me the most was on page 6. “ While he spoke, the Madeline(for so was she called) passed slowly through a remote portion of the apartment, and, without having noticed my presence, disappeared.” This made me question who madeline was and why she chose not to speak to them.
These two stories were written by two of the most great, classic writers and they both showed how the suspense and fear were drilled into the readers as their stories went on. Ghost stories will forever be iconic with the ability to entrance and engage readers of all ages.

  71. What makes a good ghost story ? I think the tone and the anticipation of the story makes a good ghost story. the reason that I think tone makes a good ghost story is because if the tone is happy in the story it would not reflect a ghost story vibe the tone of a ghost story should be creepy and a tad bit scary. The story legend shows how tone changes and makes the story so much better.“ All these, however, were mere terrors of the night, phantoms of the mind that walk in darkness” This line form the text shows tone because of the use of large words brought together to form a line that would send shivers down your back. the anticipation from the story the monkeys paws builds anticipation because the line in the story in the monkey monkeys paw said Mr. White curiously . Well its just a bit of what you might call magic. this shows anticipation because of the use of words “This is what you might call magic” this is two reasons that I found make a good ghost story.

  72. I think what makes a ghost story good is wether or not the story leaves you wondering, like in “The Monkeys Paw” where he gets selfish and wishes for the money knowing there could be some sort of consequence which turned out to be there son dying and then Mrs white thinks to bring him back with the monkey paw and he turns out to be something else in a way and Mr white realizes and (I can assume) wishes him dead again. It leaves several holes in the story for you to fill in yourself like how there was consequences for the past two wishes is there going to be one for that wish too? We will never know and there’s a creepy vibe throughout the whole story with all these strange men coming around and the death of her son and how far out they are from everything and especially when what I can assume was there son was knocking and I didn’t know what was going on with him and Mrs white is trying desperately to let him in and Mr white is trying desperately to stop him from from getting in and then as she opens the door and he isn’t there.Theres just a empty silent road and a street light. A good ghost story is a ghost story that creeps you out a little and let’s you think a little more about the story even after it’s over-isaac

  73. Ghost Stories tend to horrified you or try to when they are written with three important literary elements including suspense, foreshadowing, and imagery. To me these three things make a really good ghost story. Suspense is mostly used to build up fear or anxiety of what may occur. As it says in “The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow”, “The brook was searched, but the body of the schoolmaster was not to be discovered.” Concluding that Ichabod body was never found leaves you wondering, in fact dreading to know more. On the other hand Foreshadowing is another great component to a good ghost story by giving hints or clues of what may happen. For example in “The Monkey’s Paw” the author states. “I threw it on the fire. If you keep it, don’t hold me responsible for what happens. Throw it on the fire like a sensible man.” for giving a clue that bad things would happen and to get rid of the paw before something terribly wrong would happen. Last but not least, Imagery is another great factor in a ghost story because if described ideally the images that are planted in your head can help with the suspense, foreshadowing and a bunch of other literary elements that can make a great ghost story. As the author in “The Monkey’s Paw” states, “Herbert, who normally had a playful nature and didn’t like to take things too seriously, sat alone in the darkness looking into the dying fire. He saw faces in it; the last so horrible and so monkey-like that he stared at it in amazement.” which is trying to give some sort of imagery of the faces seen in the fire to make the person reading it curious. Suspense, foreshadowing and imagery plays a great factor in what makes a good ghost story.

    1. I agree with you on this also. I think suspense is a big deal in making a story scary. I wish I would have thought of that. But even when the wife tries to open the door for the “dead son” that ot me full of suspense in “The Monkey’s Paw.”

Phoenix Button- “The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W.Jacobs and “The Fall of The House of the User” by Edgar Allan Poe are both good ghost stories because of the use of the sequence of events, the characterization of characters, and the imagery in both texts. In “The Monkey’s Paw” when Mr.White first made the first wish, to build up suspense, the author used the crash on the piano to create an image in the reader’s head. The author also used the sense of greediness to create a negative tone and to let it be known that something bad was about to happen. Therefore because the characters were so greedy that it lead them into the cause of them getting into very bad events. Which allows the reader to fully imagine what kind of frightening events that the characters were in and understand the impact of the paw and the first wish that Mr.White made and how the exact words that he had said afterwards had determined what kind of outcome his son would soon have.”The Fall of the House of the Usher” uses from the very beginning very descriptive words to completely fill how creepy and confused the main character was feeling about the house and everyone in it. When it begins with him just staring and the “decaying house” to the event of him being lead down dark turnings it builds an imagine of unease and a not knowing what’s going on. Giving a very spooky and haunting tone to the house with every new descriptive point made about it.And when all of these things are put together they all help the reader feel all the things needed for a good ghost story. In which means that both of these stories are good ghost stories.

I tried to post this when it was due but it failed and to be on the safe side im just posting it again .

  75. Part 1: Two truths my text tries to establish are, the Monkey’s Paw isn’t good magic and magic is not to be messed with.
    Part 2:
(Q1)~ The work contradicts truths that the Monkey’s Paw will bring fortune into the lives of its owners, but it will also ultimately bring a downfall to its owners or others lives.
(Q4)~ An ideology that the text promotes is that the Monkey Paw is indeed magical, but it is more like a curse. In the text, it states, “The first man had his three wishes. Yes,” was the reply, “I don’t know what the first two were, but the third was for death. That’s how I got the paw.’ His voice was so serious that the group fell quiet.” This shows how awful the paw is on someone’s life, so they wished for death itself just to get away from it.
(Q5)~ If the Sergeant told the family what horrors might happen if they use it, then they would’ve thrown it in the fire or found another way to destroy it. “Better let it burn,’ said the soldier sadly, but in a way that let them know he believed it to be true. ‘If you don’t want it, Morris,’ said the other, ‘give it to me.’ ‘I won’t.’ said his friend with stubborn determination. ‘I threw it on the fire. If you keep it, don’t hold me responsible for what happens. Throw it on the fire like a sensible man.’ This piece of evidence shows that he didn’t go into detail about the paw’s powers, just that it should be destroyed.
(Q6)~ If the point of view was changed to the Sergeant’s view it would be filled with horror and experiences of the Monkey’s Paw and his adventures to other countries.
(Q7)~ The Sergeant’s story was barely talked about in the text. All that was discussed was his experiences with the monkey’s paw, which was only a little bit as well. The text says, “It had a spell put on it by an old fakir,’ said the Sergeant-Major, ‘a very holy man. He wanted to show that fate ruled people’s lives and that those who tried to change it would be sorry. He put a spell on it so that three different men could each have three wishes from it.” This shows what the Sergeant knew about the paw, but it doesn’t include the depth of pain that its owners faced.
Part 3: I look forward to seeing my friends and trying even harder in school so that I don’t get behind.

  76. “The Monkeys Paw” and “To be Taken by A Grain of Salt” are good ghost stories because the use of characterization and imagery. in ” The Monkeys Paw” the author uses the piano crashing to create an image in the readers head and to create suspense for the reader. The author of “The Monkeys Paw” showed the greediness of the characters by showing that Mr.White took the monkey paw even though he said he had everything he wanted, and he still made a wish. This created a negative feel to the text and let the reader know that something bad could be coming because of the characters greediness. In “To be Taken by A Grain of Salt” the author describes the figure of the murdered man by saying his face was the color of impure wax. This gives the reader an image of what the story is and they can have more details. Also in “To be Taken by a Grain of Salt ” the text says “I watched what the figure did. It stood for a few moments by the bedside of each of my eleven brother-jurymen, close to the pillow. It always went to the right-hand side of the bed, and always passed out crossing the foot of the next bed. It seemed from the action of the head, merely to look down pensively at each recumbent figure.” this show that the Author also uses characterization to make the story better by giving the reader an idea of what the murdered man was acting like and it can make the story scarier. so, both ghost stories use characterization and imagery which makes them good ghost story’s.

  77. I think the story “The Monkeys Paw” makes a good ghost story because of its use of descriptive imagery. One example of this is in the very first sentence where it states, “Outside, the night was cold and wet but a fire burned brightly in the small living room of Laburnum Villa, where Mr. White and his son Herbert were playing chess.” this explains my answer because all the different descriptive words with a dark kind of tone. I also think that the story “The Fall of the House of Usher” also uses some of the same type of words to give a dark tone to the story, and here is an example, “During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year, when clouds hung oppressively low in the heavens,”. But that is why i think think these two stories are really scary.

  78. “The Monkey’s Paw” and “To be taken with a grain of salt” make good host stories because of the settings, the characters, and the sequence of events. In “The Monkey’s Paw” the soldier coming at night during a windy night sets the tone. “There he is,” said Herbert, hearing the ate shut loudly and heavy footsteps coming to the door. The character Sergent Major Morris starts to tell stories about his adventure in India when he was over there. This gets everyone focused and sets the tone for a camp fire story picture almost. “What was that about a monkey’s paw or something you started telling me about the other day, Morris? “asked Herbert. Morris tells the family what the paw is and tries to warn them of making wishes on it. Morris character is mysterious and kind of a trouble maker for even telling them about the paw, but at the same time he is trying to help them by telling them to not make a wish. After the first wish and their son dies the setting starts to get a little scarier, you can now just imagine them knowing they caused this by the monkey’s paw and that the wish deal is real. Once the wife starts showing unnatural behavior is where I can really start to picture it. I think this part is very good imagery. I can just see an older lady standing in the dark with black eyes, head cocked to the side at a 90-degree angle with an evil smirk on her face yelling “WISH!” The author knew what he was doing when he said unnatural, that really sets the tone. The next sequence of events makes the story o from creepy to scary. Once he hears the knock and it gets louder and louder and the wife runs down to open the door to possibly to her dead son and he finds the paw and makes his last wish is disturbing but also sad. The story is a true lesson of be careful what you wish for. “To be taken with a grain of salt” had very good imagery, characters, and settings as well. When the story first starts the setting is I the writers house during breakfast. He describes the murder scene that he is reading about in the paper. “The discovery had been made in a bedroom, and, when I laid down the paper, I was aware of a flash-rush-flow- I do not know what to call it- no word I can find is satisfactorily descriptive- in which I seemed to see that bedroom passing through my room, like a picture impossibly painted on a running river.” When the writer starts to describe the feeling, he got it almost makes you get a cold chill also. The author describes the settings very well to where you can picture what is happening. I think being able to see what the writer is saying and to feel the emotions they talk about the character feeling is what makes a scary story even scarier. The next setting the writer describes the first time he sees the dead man and the murder. “As the pillar fell and the leaves dispersed, I saw two men on the opposite side of the way, going from West to East. He describes a scene of where you can visualize the victim just walking along to an unknown destination and the killer is behind him walking in a violent manner. The first time the author see’s the dead man and knows it’s a ghost is while he is talking to his servant at night I his house. “While I was speaking to him, I saw it open, and a man look in, who very earnestly and mysteriously beckoned to me.” Through the story the author gets chills and keeps seeing the dead man throughout the whole story. The ghost finally leaves him alone once the murderer is found guilty. This story has a good beginning and ending but I think the middle parts are the best and what make it such a good ghost story.

  79. “The Monkey’s Paw” and “To be Taken with a Grain of Salt” make good ghosts stories because they use imagery and the sequence of events to give the story that creepy, ghost story feeling. “The Monkey’s Paw” is set up to be creepy from the very beginning, just from using imagery. Mr. White describes, “Of all the wet, isolated places this is the worst. The path is a bog and the road’s a river, but I suppose people don’t care because only two houses in the road are occupied.” By describing this setting to us, we imagine this setting in our minds and instantly get that “spooky” feeling that good ghost stories give off. Another reason why “The Monkey’s Paw” is a good ghost story is because of the way William Jacobs sequenced events. Sergeant Major Morris was trying to tell Mr. White from the beginning that the Monkey’s Paw was not everything he thought it was, but Mr. White would not listen. Mr. White continued to make a wish, after being told that it was just to show that fate ruined people’s lives. And later Mr. White found out what that meant.. “To be Taken with a Grain of Salt” has a very good sequence that develop the story into a ghost story. One good example of this is when the story says, “While I was speaking to him I saw it open, and a man look in, who very earnestly and mysteriously beckoned to me.” Another reason why this shows a part from a good ghost story is the imagery it’s creating and the usage of words. These are just a few reasons why these stories make good ghost stories.

  80. “The monkeys paw” and “To be taken with a grain of salt ” make a good ghost story because, they both use a sense of imagery, characterization, and sequence of events to Envolve or “contribute’ to a theme . The use of imagery in each story go a long way with the use of “Words” or “Phrases” that make you have a sense of imagery for instance in ” The Monkeys paw” the text uses “He heard the chair scraping back from the door; he heard the door open” the way the text is structured gives you that sense of imagery it puts the picture in your head of “Oh I can imagine a chair scraping the door, and also the door opening”. The use of characterization in the story helps devlop the “Theme” alot Because when writeing or “Conducting” a story “Characterzation” is a very important role. The characterization plays alot in the way they feel, talk and react to situations that happen in the story. Like in the story “To be taken with a grain of salt ” has alot of characterization in it mainly with “feelings” and the way characters react to different situations like how the juror is exposed to this issue with a murder victim it exposes “Characterzation” with how he “Reacts” to the situation or the way he feels towards it .The sequence of events is also a major point when in Devloping a “Theme”. You cant have a purpose or a “Main idea” with out a sequence of events . Sequence of events is very very important The reader needs to be able to follow what the narrarator is trying to say or follow what the “Theme” of the story is like in both storys each character goes threw steps or actions that lead up to something bigger like in “The monkeys paw” Mr.white and Mrs.white go threw a sequence of events that lead up to there son dieing Or like in “To be taken with a grain of salt ” the juror goes threw events as well to contribute to the “theme”. They all come together to make a good ghost story with out those things it would not be a good “Ghost story” .

  81. what makes a good ghost story to me is it has to be suspenseful because if not it just makes the story boring. In The Monkeys Paw it had someone knock on the door and the family opened the door but no one was at the door. Now if there was someone at the door, it would be a normal story with one of the family members opening the door, but there was no one at the door. So that makes us wonder about who knocked on the door.

  82. I chose”The Monkey’s Paw” as one of the good ghost stories because of the suspense in the story. In the text it says” He heard the movement of the lock as she began to open it, and at the same moment he found the monkey’s paw, and frantically breathed his third and last wish.” How this creates suspense is the story never tells you what happens next. Also before that sentence it says the the thing outside is banging on the door so hard its echoing threw the house which also makes you want to know if the thing outside is going to get threw the door.I also chose “To Be Taken As a Grain of Salt” because this story has imagery in it.In the text it says”I saw their two faces very distinctly, and I knew that I could recognize them anywhere. Not that I had consciously noticed anything very remarkable in either face, except that the man who went first had an unusually lowering appearance, and that the face of the man who followed him was of the color of impure wax.”this shows imagery by giving the reader a mental picture of what the two men look like.

  83. I really loved “The Monkey’s Paw” because of the theme, That fate controls people’s lives and those who interfere with fate do so to their sorrow. The Man in the story used the paw to get what he thought he wanted, when his choices backfired on him before he even noticed the evil powers of the paw. He and his wife ended up with horrible casualties, and had no m ore wishes to correct their mistakes. The text states,”He heard the movement of the lock as she began to open it, and at the same moment he found the monkey’s paw, and frantically breathed his third and last wish.” This quote shows his last wish, to the creature at the door, his dead son, to disappear. This quote also show the theme, that interfering with fate will leave you in sorrow.

  84. “Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “The Monkey’s Paw” both make great ghost stories because they use characterization and setting. In “Legend of Sleepy Hollow” the setting is a great way to show how this is a good ghost story. It states that the town is “haunted” and explains how all the stuff that has happened in the town. This is a great example of setting, and a great way to set a story in place. In addition “The Monkey’s Paw” states, “Outside, the night was cold and wet, but in the small living room the curtains were closed and the fire burned brightly.” This is an amazing example of setting because it states the time weather and where they are. It also imitates a spooky setting because it’s cold and rainy outside, and it’s night time. “The Monkey’s Paw” also has a great way of showing characterization through “Sergeant-Major Morris”. When he first shows himself the passage states, “the gate banged shut loudly and heavy footsteps came toward the door.” Which at first could be misleading and scary by the way he was acting, which setts a very intense and suspense feeling for the reader. Also the “Legend of Sleepy Hollow” shows an example of characterization by explaining in detail the “sleepy hollow boys”. They were descendants of the original Dutch settlers, and they were known to be described as rustic and drowsy. This is a great example of characterization because it explains the characters in detail and shows how creepy this town really is because of their settlers.

  85. “To Be Taken With a Grain of Salt” and “The Monkey’s Paw” make good ghost stories because of their use of descriptive imagery, and setting to lay out the details and scenes of the story very intricately. For example, “To Be Taken With a Grain of Salt” says, “It was in no romantic place that I had this curious sensation, but in chambers in Piccadilly, very near to the corner of Saint James’s Street. It was entirely new to me. I was in my easy-chair at the moment, and the sensation was accompanied with a peculiar shiver which started the chair from its position. (But it is to be noted that the chair ran easily on castors.) I went to one of the windows (there are two in the room, and the room is on the second floor) to refresh my eyes with the moving objects down in Piccadilly. It was a bright autumn morning, and the street was sparkling and cheerful. The wind was high. As I looked out, it brought down from the Park a quantity of fallen leaves, which a gust took, and whirled into a spiral pillar.” The story “The Monkey’s Paw” says, “Outside, the night was cold and wet, but in the small living room the curtains were closed and the
fire burned brightly. Father and son were playing chess; the father, whose ideas about the game
involved some very unusual moves, putting his king into such sharp and unnecessary danger that it
even brought comment from the white-haired old lady knitting quietly by the fire.” These quotes show that there are a myriad of descriptive details used in both passages. The inclusion of so many details makes the reader able to create a mental picture of what is happening in the text, which therefore entices the reader to keep reading and enjoy the story.
